Craving rural peace and quiet at a Nord-Pas-de-Calais hideaway? Put Domaine de la Papelutte on your list of possibles. This leafy spot is far away from urban noise and surrounded by leafy landscaped gardens – and another big bonus of booking in here is that you get access to several fishing ponds, well-stocked for anglers novice or expert. About 50 minutes’ drive south from Dunkirk or Calais, and therefore handy for UK travellers coming off the ferries, the site is easily accessed from quiet country roads. Accommodation is on neatly tended and spacious grass pitches, delineated by hedges, surrounded by greenery and with access to hot showers and washing-up sinks. Barbecues are permitted on site (buy basics in Blaringhem, five minutes’ drive) but if alfresco cooking is not for you, then there’s a snack bar (the only spot with wifi) on site. You can grab freshly made fries, burgers and sandwiches, perhaps accompanied by a glass of local cider and enjoyed on the deck overlooking the fishing ponds, which are designed for trout, carp and coarse fishing. Buy permits for a small fee when on site.

This is a pleasant and welcoming site, with excellentaccueil and friendly staff. New, clean facilities are available, though some washing-up areas are outdoors. Pitches can be uneven with soft soil, and some areas are still being upgraded. The site is quiet and peaceful, ideal for overnight stays or exploring nearby Belgium. Snack bar is only open weekends and the restaurant hours can be inconsistent. Toilet paper is not provided in toilets.

Disliked The restaurant (that should be open till 9pm on a sunday) closed at 5.30pm, and the bar shortly afterwards, leaving us with no food

No toilet paper in toilets, you must bring your own
