General

  • Green and flowery site between Lens and Lille
  • Fishing pond nearby and golf within three kilometres
  • Pet friendly

Bargain hunters, all roads should lead to Lille. Et pourquoi? Because France's fifth biggest city should be on any canny shopper's must-do destination list: it's rightly famed for its markets, including the huge Wazemmes Market for foodie goods, its Sunday arts market, and, if you're fortunate/savvy enough to visit the city in early September, bargains galore at Europe's biggest flea market.

And how splendid would it be to then retreat to a peaceful rural base after a day among all this shoppin, the city sightseeing and the spectacular Palais des Beaux-Arts… at serenely colourful Camp Des Roses…? The road to Lille is a simple one from here: all you need to do is drive the few minutes to local town Auber, then travel 20 minutes from there along the N41 to reach Lille, leaving of course bags of room in the car to stash all your bargains on the laden journey home.

Camp Des Roses is a green and flower-filled site in the Nord Pas De Calais region, just at the border with Belgium and 25 minutes' north of the commune of Lens and its famed Louvre museum and gallery. Plenty of walking paths are close by if you need a day off from the shopping, or you could cast off at the local pond or tee off at the golf course in Illies, three kilometres away.

Facilities include a playground and a pétanque court, a games room, hot showers and a launderette. Wifi is available throughout the site.

Local attractions

Lille is a city of markets and museums, set among handsome Flemish architecture and pretty public gardens including the huge Citadel Park in the vicinity of Lille Zoo.

The Wazemmes Market, held on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday mornings at the Place de la Nouvelle Aventure, is one of the biggest of its kind in France, where all sorts of regional produce is sold to foodie visitors (the local cheese, Vieux Lille, is a lip-smacking must). On Sundays, pick up paintings, crafts and other arty goods at the arts market at Place des Archives.

If you're in town on the first Saturday and Sunday in September you absolutely must get along to the Braderie de Lille, the biggest flea market in Europe (you'll probably be swept along whether you intend to or not, as over 10,000 traders flock to town with their wares, and a good part of the city centre is given over to the stalls). Mosey along to unearth your own perle rare/ hidden gem among the huge selection of vintage and retro items, then tuck into a tasty portion of moules frites to round off your shopping day.

Lens 25 kilometres or so to the south is mainly famed for the Louvre-Lens art museum, home to a big collection of paintings, sculptures and other arty objets loaned from the vast collections of the Musée du Louvre a couple of kilometres south in Paris.
