  • Family-friendly campsite in a rural riverside location
  • A 500-metre walk from Vielmur-sur-Agout; Castres 15 minutes' drive
  • Outdoor pool, snack bar with terrace and spacious green pitches
Green, serene and near a whole lot of water, there's a lot to like about Camping Le Pessac. Firstly, its small-scale approach to camping that makes space for nature, with generous pitches that are encircled by trees and shrubs. Second, its location deep in the Tarn, a wild expanse of mountains, plains and valleys – in the quietest bits you can walk all day and only see a handful of people… But civilisation is close enough if you want it – Camping Le Pessac is an easy 500-metre walk from the centre of Vielmur-sur-Agout, a small riverside village with amenities like a railway station, bakery and fast food restaurant. There's also Castres (15 minutes' drive), the biggest town in the Tarn with galleries, parks and gardens, while ancient red-brick Albi is a 40-minute drive to the north. Spread over one and a half hectares, this site has leisure amenities like an outdoor pool (including a shallower kids' pool for the little ones), a snack bar with a terrace, tennis courts and evening entertainment (in high season only). You can bring your dog along too – a particularly recommended option if you're after lots of walks in the nearby Sidobre countryside.

Local attractions

Whatever the time of year, bring some sensible footwear – Camping Le Pessac is roughly a quarter of an hour's drive from the hiking trails of the spectacular Sidobre Massif, one of the prettiest parts of the Haut-Languedoc regional park. More adventure is in store at the Montagne Noire (an hour), on the high-altitude Passerelle de Mazamet footbridge (35 minutes) and at Lac des Montagnès (40 minutes), where watersports galore are up for grabs. Time for some towns? Castres is the Tarn's top spot for arts, culture and history, with museums dedicated to famed French political leader Jean-Jaurès and 19th-century Spanish painter Goya. Albi (40 minutes) is also likely to impress with its grand cathedral, Toulouse-Lautrec gallery, covered market and handsome historical watermills. When you want to get to the big city, catch the train from Vielmur-sur-Agout station and you’ll be walking the pink stone streets of Toulouse in just over an hour (driving takes a similar amount of time; about an hour and ten minutes in light traffic). Here, there's all you need for a successful day trip, from live music to botanic gardens and relaxed river cruises along the Garonne.
