  • Sprawling site in the scenic grounds of a pretty 19th-century house
  • A 35-minute drive from Grands Causses and 45 minutes from Albi
  • Swimming pool, bar-restaurant and miniature farm on site
In the scenic area of Tarn that falls almost precisely between the spectacular Gorges du Tarn and the stunning Gorges de l’Aveyron is a large-scale – but peaceful – family-friendly site that should entice all holiday-goers with a taste for pretty vistas, traditional architecture and absolutely tons of nature: La Bastide d’Albignac, 10 minutes’ drive from Le Dourn. The site, on the 42-hectare grounds of a 19th-century brick country house, has plenty to keep guests entertained, from table tennis and pétanque to guided hikes around the grounds. More leisurely pursuits are easily sorted too, with an outdoor swimming pool for swims and a miniature farm where the kids can meet ponies, donkeys and other farm animals. Start days of explores on the right foot by sitting down to breakfast in the spacious breakfast hall (which also serves as the site’s restaurant by night), before wandering off along the stream to uncover the wooded areas and lovely views across the grounds. Interest in stretching legs piqued by rambles round the site? The site team are happy to advise guests on a range of hikes (and bikes) of all levels nearby, and the Grands Causses Regional Natural Park is 35 minutes’ drive from base for even more of both.

Local attractions

Stays hereabouts should start with explores of some of the major historical sights of the Tarn, beginning with a pilgrimage to the early-20th-century Viaur Viaduct, France’s first large steel bridge, 40 minutes’ drive away. Turn away, then, from grand feats of engineering with trips to the oh-so-pretty Brousse-le-Château village and its castle (30 minutes), and to Château du Bosc (35 minutes), the family home of famed artist Toulouse-Lautrec. Plenty more to entice history buffs can be found in the large Midi-Pyrénées town of Albi (45 minutes), with explores of its Toulouse-Lautrec museum, fashion museum and Berber palace. Those who prefer to keep feet firmly in the present might wish instead to visit the famed Saint Cécile cathedral, the gardens, or the waterpark. More time out and about in nature ought to be spent on journeys to the spectacularly scenic Gorges du Tarn and Gorges de l’Aveyron (both an hour and 20 minutes away), or with a day wandering among les animaux at Pradinas Animal Park (55 minutes) and Zoo des Trois Vallées (an hour and 10 minutes). For more traditionally French excursions, opt for a visit to the cheese caves of the Roquefort Société (an hour and 10 minutes away), or settle in for vineyard tours and wine tasting at Abbaye Saint Michel (an hour from base) or any of the handful of wineries closer to hand.
