  • Dog-friendly lake site set out over a peaceful oak grove
  • A 35-minute drive to Bonaguil Castle; the Dordogne Valley further out
  • Fishing, watersports and beach on the lake; restaurant and beach hut
Rise, shine and swim… on the shore of an almost four-hectare lake, the oak grove pitches at Montaigu Plage are a top-notch base for days spent swimming, fishing or trying out all kinds of watersports. This site is in Tarn-et-Garonne on the border of Lot and Lot et Garonne and it’s a nature, gourmet, festive and family destination all in one. All the pitches are spacious (at a minimum of 100 metres squared), but you’ll get to go around and choose your preferred patch: perhaps a shaded position under the oaks or an open spot near the lake? Somewhere close to the site’s restaurant named La Cabane, which has a terrace overlooking the lake. It serves a coffee croissant formula or full breakfast (between 7am and 10am) and simple salads, grilled meats and pizzas concocted from local products for dinner (between 7.30pm and 10pm)? Handily, pancakes, paninis, ice creams and drinks are also served at the beach cabin between 10am and 6pm. Other gourmet activities include visits to farms and local markets or thematic hikes organised by Gaëlle every week. The site sells bread and pastries from the site’s baker and local products. This should all be enough to fuel your activities: fishing for trout, carp or black bass (fishing tackle is sold at reception) or tours of the site’s miniature farm. Other activities include pedalos, kayaking, yoga kayaking, buoy rides, flyboarding, archery, tennis, beach tennis, beach volleyball, pétanque and table tennis. In high season, the site’s entertainment program might include dance evenings on Wednesdays, a pétanque competition on Fridays, an open-air cinema, concerts, quizzes and trips to local markets, neighbouring villages and local festivals. What about practical facilities? Montaigu Plage has a main toilet block, two annexes, wifi in the restaurant and a common area with a barbecue, bowling alley, table tennis and bouncy castle.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Gaelle and Sophie were very friendly and helpful. The location was lovely as was the the pitch.

Disliked: The shower and toilet blocks need some investment. They are clean, but are very old and tired. It would be good is the restaurant was open over weekends. It seems really odd that it isn’t. Provide a large swimming area in the lake for campsite guests. It’s size seems to have been sacrificed to creat addition space for the guy on the jet ski to zoom around.

Disliked: We really hope it gets the funding so it can renovate little things like toilets but overall lovely place.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: The setting was beautiful with wonderful views

Disliked: Wasn’t aware that the restaurant was closed on a Thursday until we arrived at around 6pm. There was the option (we were told) of takeaway pizza from 7pm. Got there at 8.05 and was told it was now closed.

Local attractions

A cultural break this may be… there are well-preserved Romanesque cloisters at the Saint-Pierre Abbey in Moissac (35 minutes’ drive) and the fairy-tale-like medieval Bonaguil Castle (35 minutes) to visit. That’s not forgetting Rocamadour (an hour and 45 minutes), a clifftop village, which has everything from a basilica and religious buildings complex to a nearby forest with macaques (La Forêt des Singes). That’s a lot of variety already – but there’s plenty more to spice up your itinerary, such as a boat ride on the underground river at Gouffre de Padirac (an hour and 45 minutes), where there’s a huge cave, or ticking off the five historic castles in the Dordogne Valley (around an hour and 20 minutes).
