Local attractions
The Lot has an abundance of historic villages to discover – many of them members of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France. First among equals is Collonges-la-Rouge (45 minutes’ drive), renowned for its historic houses built of soft red stone. At Autoire (55 minutes), you can explore the ‘little Versailles of the Lot’, so called as its cobbled alleys are lined with elegant Renaissance-era mansions and half-timbered manor houses.
Lovers of architecture should have Loubressac and Carennac (both 35 minutes) on their itineraries; both villages are home to medieval castles and Romanesque churches. And do try to fit in UNESCO-listed Rocamadour (an hour), a spectacular pilgrimage village clinging precariously to a cliffside that hides a revered statue of the Black Madonna in Chapelle Notre-Dame.
If the kids are fast wearying of heritage and history, treat them to boat trips through the vast underground network of caves at the Gouffre de Padirac (40 minutes). They’ll hopefully also be fascinated by the prehistoric animal paintings swathing cave walls at the Grottes Préhistoriques de Cougnac (an hour and a half).
