- Three restored medieval farmsteads with smashing valley views
- Winery tours and tastings around local Dordogne valley vineyards
- Outdoor pool with four-lane super slide
If swish, pristine and packed with modern facilities is what you’re after, then you might just want to pause for a sec and peruse this site’s pics. With cracking views out across the surrounding countryside, Domaine de La Paille Basse is set among a hilltop woodland a lofty 250 metres above sea level, and its many family-friendly facilities are housed across three handsome and pristinely restored medieval farm buildings.
First thing’s first, you’ll probably want to check out the pool area upon your triumphant arrival… Or, at least the kids will when they find out there’s a four-lane super slide to swoosh down. The rest of the family can splash around in the pool or bask alongside, or instead avail themselves of sports and games facilities like ping pong, basketball, football, water volleyball, tennis and pétanque; during July and August, the site runs aqua aerobics classes for guests to opt into if they feel the need to burn off a few baguette-based calories.
During July and August kids will be most entertained by the site’s resident clown and teddy bear mascot, as well as the kids' club activities that take place every morning for littlies aged between four and 12 years, such as treasure hunts, cuddles with furry critters at the mini farm, fun outdoor games, dancing and rehearsals for an extra special kids’ performance... And when they’re not being occupied by this plethora of pursuits, they’ll most likely be spied at one of the site’s two playgrounds or playing with new pals in the games room.
The bar serves relaxed evening drinks on the terrace under the shade of a huge horse chestnut tree, and during peak season the highly enthused entertainment team continue their excellently executed job well into the evening, with events to amuse the whole family ranging from kids’ shows to bingo and quiz nights, karaoke and concerts, and evening markets and themed evenings. If you’re a tiny dancer, you can instead hot foot it over to the disco room (open three nights a week) to throw a few shapes and verily impress your fellow guests.
Homemade regional eats are served at the on-site restaurant for dining in or taking away, and for times when a rather more casual approach is required, the snack bar and creperie serves sweet and savoury crêpes (naturellement) as well as ice cream, sandwiches and refreshments throughout the afternoon. Self-caterers can head to the on-site shop to pick up other snacky treats like pastries, fresh bread, fruit and veg and other essentials, and should you fancy a tipple, wine is on sale there too.

Many sites set a maximum occupancy of 6/8 people per pitch, so try breaking your booking down into smaller groups to generate more results. For example, if you’re a group of 10, enter 5 people in your initial search and then book 2 pitches.
However, where the pitch or accommodation occupancy allows it, you can make a booking for up to 30 adults and 30 children in one booking.
To book multiple pitches or accommodation, use the 'Special requests' box on the booking page to ask to be sited together. Complete the booking form for the first booking (you can add a password and save your card so that we remember your details). Then click "Make another booking like this" at the top of the confirmation page to make the next booking.

Please note: It's highly recommended that guests don't rely on a satnav, as it's likely to be incorrect. From the A20, take Exit 55 for Souillac. At the second roundabout after the toll, drive towards Salignac. Follow signs only for 'La Paille Basse'; the site is eight kilometres from Souillac.
Set between the pretty Périgord region and the village of Souillac, the site is among an area that's full of national heritage sites, cultural activities and the promise of sampling many a tasty gastronomic treat: right in the Dordogne valley between Rocamadour and Sarlat (both within 50 minutes’ drive), you’re handily placed for day trips to wine cellars, castles, museums and a whole heap of verily handsome villages.
Excursions to the lush and local Dordogne valley vineyards are just one of the many top trips off site – highly recommended if you aim to become au fait with the local grape varieties and their corresponding vinos. Also highly recommended by site staff as a splendid excursion to squeeze into one's itinerary is a trip out to one of the area’s many local farm (some of which produce France’s famed foie gras), and while you’re there you can pick up tidbits of local produce with which to fill up the picnic hamper or save for a grilled evening feast outdoors.
History hunters can catch a spot of natural history at the Lascaux Caves and the national prehistory museum in Les Eyzies, or if you’re more of an active sort, you can round up the family, load them into canoes or kayaks and embark on a gentle paddle along the Dordogne river. Prefer your pursuits to be of a drier nature? Then the cycle routes alongside are a splendid on-land alternative.
