  • Family-friendly site by a stream on the Lot/Dordogne border
  • A 10-minute drive from Souillac; 40 minutes from Rocamadour
  • Outdoor pool, waterslide, bike hire, kids' club, restaurant and bar
Just on the very spot where the Lot region meets the Dordogne region, family-friendly Camping La Draille is in a prime position for holidays exploring both of these fine areas. From here, Souillac, its 12th-century basilica and its Dordogne access are a short 10-minute drive away; the town is also home to handy amenities like a supermarket, railway station and tourist office (word on the grapevine is that they also produce a punchy plum brandy over here). All sorts of châteaux, canoe trips and other outdoorsy activities can be easily accessed within a short drive too. Not that it’s all about being out and about – you’re likely to want to spend some time dawdling around this site too. It’s in a tree-lined valley and backs onto a stream for paddles, swims and messing about in boats. There’s more watery activity at the pair of outdoor pools, one of which has a popular waterslide (‘steps, slide, splash, repeat’ may well become something of a holiday routine for the smaller travellers). Landlubbers, meanwhile, have access to nearby nature trails, cycle routes and footpaths (with some impressive rock formations to see along the way). Bikes can be hired on site if you’re in need of wheels to explore, or you can stay close to home for pétanque, tennis, playground time or kids’ club activities. Plates of food to fuel all this activity can be picked up at the site’s restaurant, or you can sort your own by grabbing supplies at the shop to get your barbecue going.

Local attractions

Did you even go to the Dordogne if you didn’t take a canoe out at least once? It’s a hugely popular activity (and with good reason – it’s a fun way to see some splendid scenery) so at some point you should certainly plan to hire a vessel for some paddling from Souillac (10 minutes’ drive). While you’re in town, you may also like to spend some time checking out the clockwork figurines at the Musée de l’Automate, buckle up for rides at Quercyland theme park or get in the saddle for horse rides from the local stables. In the mood for pretty wanders? Take a walk through the fab formal gardens at Eyrignac Manor (20 minutes) or head to Château de Beynac (40 minutes) to explore a clifftop medieval castle that towers over the river and village below. Elsewhere, you may like to take the tiddlers to meet the collection of creatures at Calviac zoo (20 minutes), wander around the ancient shrines of Rocamadour (40 minutes) or go deep underground at Padirac Cave (40 minutes).
