  • Small, peaceful campsite close to the Canal du Midi in Haute-Garonne
  • A five-minute drive to historic Revel and a lake; an hour to Toulouse
  • On-site sports next to a pool, close to shops, brasseries and a market
A cosy site run by a family for families, Camping Le Moulin du Roy is a five-minute drive from the medieval market town of Revel in the Haute-Garonne. It’s a fab spot for swimmers, sailors and cyclists too, right next to the municipal swimming pool (access is free for campers), five minutes’ drive from boating on the Bassin de Saint-Ferréol and close to the cycling path along the Canal du Midi. There’s plenty for families to do on site; kids can try their hand at pétanque or challenge new-found pals to table tennis, and there’s a play area with a seesaw and slide too. Older kids can wear themselves out playing volleyball or try a few turns at the skatepark (10 minutes’ walk). And for a quiet family night in, you can borrow books or games at reception. You’ll never go hungry here either. As well as plenty of handy supermarkets and a bunch of pizzerias and brasseries, Revel is famed for its historic Saturday market. Sprawling around a 14th-century hall, it’s been going for 600 years and here you can pick up fresh local cheeses, saucisson and artisan breads for family meals – or choose barbecue bits and get together with fellow guests around the communal grills in the evening.

Local attractions

The Bassin de Saint-Ferréol (five minutes’ drive) is a hotspot for adventures on the water, from windsurfing to dinghy sailing. Lessons and equipment hire are available, so you don’t have to bring all the gear from home. You can visit the dam (10 minutes), and as it’s the source of the Canal du Midi, you might like to potter around on a narrow boat too. Long-distance cyclists can hop onto the canal’s towpath at the lake, and there are numerous hiking trails and bike rides in the forests and hills of the Montagne Noire (five minutes) – and to get the adrenaline pumping, head for the via ferrata climbing course at Durfort (10 minutes). Toulouse (one hour) is just the spot for a cultural shot in the arm, packed with grand architecture, churches and museums – and if that sounds like long faces from the kids, you can always treat them to an afternoon of IMAX movies at Cité de l’Espace (50 minutes).
