  • Green and shaded site 45 minutes' drive from Toulouse
  • Surrounded by hiking trails plus fishing and canoeing nearby
  • Heated pool, playground and summer restaurant
Tasty French cuisine and local and seasonal products await at Camping Le Mercier’s restaurant, to sate starving guests after long old days of sightseeing around the park’s surrounding departments of Haute-Garonne, Ariège and Aude – think steak tartare, house foie gras, duck fat fries, and suckling pig… All washed down, naturellement, with some tasty local wines. Around here you’re within easy reach of several topping sightseeing spots, including the medieval walled city of Carcassonne – the largest of its kind in Europe – and the also UNESCO-listed Canal du Midi, for serene canal trips and bike rides alongside. Le Mercier lies peacefully in the riverside village of Calmont, at the foot of the Lauragais hills and in front of the Pyrenees, a short walk from all the usual and highly handy amenities like like a bakery, a grocery store, a pharmacy and a butcher’s shop, as well as a hair salon and a wellness centre for oh-so relaxing massages and other pampering treatments (you are on hol, after all). The vibe here at Le Mercier is a warm and friendly one, and the setting beaut and bucolic; pitches and leisure facilities are set among a green, pretty and shaded place, with fishing and canoeing close to the site in the peaceful waters of the Hers-Vif river, as well as kilometres of countryside for more hiking: pick up a map at reception for the pick of the best local paths. Leisure facilities on site include a seasonal heated outdoor pool and a playground, as well as a summer restaurant with regular evening entertainment.

Local attractions

Around Calmont is a network of scenic walking trails, and Hers-Vif river close by is a splendid spot to fish in or explore by canoe or kayak. Camping Le Mercier is 45 minutes drive of Toulouse and its famed saucissons: from here, seasoned long-distance cyclists can pedal 50 kilometres along the UNESCO-listed Canal du Midi to Port Lauragais between Villefranche-de-Lauragais and Castelnaudary, where also you can hire boats to float back along the canal. Venturing out by vehicle, the UNESCO-listed medieval hilltop citadel of Carcassonne – Europe’s largest – 40 minutes away is a must-see around here for its watchtowers and double-walled forts: also splendidly, the Château Comtal – a 12th-century castle within Carcassonne’s walls – showcases archaeological exhibits guided tours too. Another historic spot worth a trip while in this part of the world include Mirepoix, for its craft markets, exhibitions, flea markets, concerts and festivals around Place des Couverts and its spectacular cathedral.
