  • Peaceful family-friendly rural site 20 minutes' drive from Conques
  • Rodez and Figeac and the Lot river within an hour's drive
  • Two-hectare lake on site for fishing and nature trails
How long can you spare for your hols? The folks at Camping Etang du Camp suggest you schedule in at least eight days at their peaceful rural place 20 minutes from Conques. Why eight, you ask? Well, that’s so you can work your way down the ‘Eight days and eight great adventures’ guide they’ve produced for guests. Kind of like a family-friendly bucket list for this part of the Midi-Pyrénées, it covers attractions both natural and man-made, along with a few outdoorsy activities to take in some of the stunning scenery. Of course, in an ideal world you’d spend a little longer here – thus leaving you enough time to hang out on site for a while, playing games of volleyball and pétanque, fishing in the two-hectare lake or following the waterside nature trail. There’s also a playground to keep the tiddlers busy while you grab a coffee or an ice cream (although you may find they come running back when they glimpse the latter). This site stretches out over a sizeable five hectares, but the peeps here aren’t packing guests in like sardines – they’ve limited the number of pitches (all level and with water, electricity and a bit of shade) to ensure peace and space for all comers. There’s still a chance to be sociable, though – themed meals are organised weekly in high season, and you’ll sometimes find a campfire being lit for folks to cluster around.

Local attractions

You’ll never be stumped for things to do around these parts if you’ve got a copy of the site’s own guide to the best of the area. Without wanting to give the game away too much, highlights include medieval Conques (the nearest settlement and a stop on the St James’s Way pilgrimage route), the markets of Figeac (50 minutes away) and the pink sandstone Notre-Dame cathedral in Rodez (45 minutes). Active days await, too: hiking and biking your way through the Lot Valley, or taking a half-hour drive to paddle your way along the river in a kayak. If that’s all a bit much, perhaps just pick a village to stroll around: Entraygues-sur-Truyère (half an hour’s drive), Vinzelle (35 minutes) and Belcastel (45 minutes) are all pretty places to potter about in. A little further afield, those with an eye for engineering and design will want to make trails to the Millau Viaduct, an hour and a half away – the world’s highest and longest motorway bridge is quite some sight to behold. While you’re there it's just a few minutes further to hit the Roquefort cellars for some local cheese to accompany your evening aperitif.
