There’s really rather a lot to do on site at Villatent at Camping Les Genêts – so it’s rather handy to hear that the smart safari tents at this Aveyron site require very little effort to move into. Beds are made up, a private bathroom is included and the kitchen’s been equipped with plenty of useful stuff. With no tent to set up, guests here can waste no time at all getting started on the games of football, basketball, pétanque and miniature golf that await, jumping into the heated swimming pool for a dip or unwinding from a long journey with a workout at the open-air gym. Or maybe it’s going to be straight down to the lake? Camping Les Genêts, 10 minutes’ drive from Salles-Curan, is on the banks of Lake Pareloup, with its own sandy beach area, various inflatables for the kids to clamber on and kayaks and canoes to paddle. Back on dry land there’s plenty more to keep the kids suitably amused – bouncy castles and a play area cater for the smallest guests, and there are organised activities to get stuck into in high season too (sports and games by day, music and shows by night). The folk here have even set up a disco for the teens so they can socialise without any embarrassing parents lurking in the background (and without disturbing the peace, as it’s well away from the accommodation). If all this leaves you too busy to cook, make for the restaurant, or hit the takeaway for pizzas and hamburgers to eat on your terrace. There’s also a bar that serves up cool drinks and cocktails and shows major sporting events.

Local attractions

If you only make it off site once, it should be to the town of Millau, 45 minutes’ drive away. There’s plenty to fill a day over here, whether you fancy taking the Gallo-Roman ruins of La Graufesenque, admiring the smart townhouses and gardens or taking in everything from gloves to dinosaurs at the town’s museum. And of course there’s the Millau Viaduct: the Norman Foster-designed tallest bridge in the world. How you explore is up to go: to inside the structure, travel to a nearby village to see it or sign up for paragliding to get a bird’s-eye view. Time for more outings? Get a feel for local life at Musée de Saint-Beauzély (25 minutes’ drive), meet some mini beasts at Micropolis Cité des Insectes (half an hour) or take a trip to Rodez (40 minutes) to roam around its medieval centre, taking in the gothic cathedral and fine arts museum along the way.
