Sitting on the shore of peaceful Lac de Selves, 10 minutes’ drive from Saint-Amans-des-Cots in the Midi-Pyrénées, Camping Domaine des Tours is a leafy hideaway spanning 37 acres tucked between forested hills and pristine waters. With electric hook-ups to its grass pitches, it’s a wonderfully family-friendly spot with lots going on to keep everyone happy, yet it maintains a restful vibe thanks to its rural location far from city chaos. At Domaine des Tours, the focus is on active holidays in the bracing air of the Aubrac foothills; there's a kids' club for 4–11-year-olds and a teens' club for 12–17-year-olds, plus sports tournaments, Zumba classes and a pétanque court – and of course, the double waterslide in the waterpark sees a lot of action too. But that’s before you’ve even got to the lake, where you can climb all over the floating obstacle course, go paddleboarding and fishing, or soak up the sun on the mini beach. Amenities-wise, the site also comes up trumps. There’s a welcoming bar and well-stocked grocery store for all your daily needs, and the restaurant serves pizzas and burgers on its lakeside terrace; you might also catch themed evenings showcasing local Aveyron produce. Other foodie facilities include a snack bar, takeaway service and daily fresh bread delivery, so there are lots of options for keeping everyone fed and watered.

You can take gentle family walks around Lac de Selves, and for more adventurous jaunts the Aubrac plateau and Aveyron mountains are laced with hiking trails and cycling routes – the site hires out bikes if you’ve left yours at home. If you prefer your stroll with a ball involved, perhaps try the nine-hole course at Golf de Laguiole-Mezeyrac (15 minutes’ drive). When you’d like to experience a bit of local Aveyron culture, head to Laguiole (20 minutes), a traditional village of stone-built, slate-roofed cottages with pale-green shutters; it’s known for its artisans producing steel knives and a cooperative where you can sample Laguiole and Tome de l’Aubrac cheeses from regional Aubrac cattle. Two local villages are listed among Les Plus Beaux Villages de France. Medieval Estaing (25 minutes) sits on a meander in the River Lot and is dominated by an impressive château, which is open for tours. Entraygues-sur-Truyère (half an hour) has enchanting cobbled streets lined with half-timbered houses and is the gateway to exploration of the Truyère Gorges and their series of dams.
