- Luxury Aveyron eco-lodges on the edge of Saint-Affrique
- A 20-minute drive to Roquefort-sur-Soulzon or Château de Montaigut
- Private hot tub for each lodge; shared heated outdoor pool
If you were to pick any spot in France for an ecolodge, the Grands Causses Regional Natural Park would have to be a contender – and that’s what the owners of Domaine Le Vaxergues have done. This small glamping site offers a good dose of luxury for guests while also employing eco-friendly principles to ensure it’s only having minimal impact on the surroundings.
Green aspects at this Aveyron site include electric car charging, renewable energy and bike hire so guests can get out and about without a car. Handily, the property is on the edge of the little town of Saint-Affrique, so there are plenty of amenities within walking distance too – a supermarket is just a couple of minutes’ walk away and the town centre’s shops, cafés and restaurants are about 20 minutes’ walk.
Being in a natural park, of course the surroundings are pretty stunning and well worth exploring. Staying here puts you within easy reach of hiking trails, geological sites, traditional villages and other attractions including a botanic garden and the famed cheese cellars of Roquefort-sur-Soulzon.
Once you’ve finished your day of exploring, you’ll be coming back to a cosy self-contained lodge with its own kitchen and bathroom, plus an outdoor space with seating and a splendid hot tub where you can bubble away in the open air. The site also has a heated outdoor/covered pool with loungers, along with a play area and a pétanque court for a bit of activity.

Start with a stroll around Saint-Affrique (20 minutes’ walk) – it’s got a lots of lovely little shops and hosts markets on Saturdays and selected summer Thursdays. Also close by for foodies are L'Arc En Miel honey farm (five minutes’ drive) and Brasserie l’Astrolabe brewery (10 minutes), along with the fabulous cheese cellars of Roquefort-sur-Soulzon (20 minutes), where you can sample the wares in the place they were made.
To work up an appetite for those tastings, you may like to try out one of Roquefort’s hiking trails – perhaps the Sentier des échelles or Sentier du Menhir, both wonderful ways to see some of the scenery. The geological cirque at Tournemire (20 minutes) is another place that’s worth seeking out for a walk.
Add a bit of local heritage to the mix with a wander around a historic village like Saint-Jean-d’Alcas (20 minutes) or a visit to Château de Montaigut (20 minutes), up on a hilltop with sweeping views over the valley below. Espace botanique Hippolyte Coste (25 minutes) is a must-visit for gardeners to learn about the ‘priest of flowers’ and explore the gardens.
