- Peaceful site on an Angora goats’ farm in the Aveyron department
- Lodève half an hour’s drive; Montpellier an hour and 15 minutes
- Dogs welcome; wild swimming in the Vérenne; weekly fishmonger visits
Fancy a taste of rural life? Then head to Mas d’Arbousse, a small site on a farm in a remote valley in the Aveyron department of southern France. ‘Remote’ is not a hollow marketing term here: the nearest village (Ceilhes-et-Rocozels) is more than five kilometres away (10 minutes’ drive).
However, if you feel the need to escape this blissfully peaceful eco-farm, the Ceilhes-Roqueredonde train station is a five-minute drive from the site (or a 25-minute walk), with trains travelling north to Millau (a trip of an hour and 20 minutes) or south to Beziers (an hour and 45 minutes). The small town of Lodève is half an hour’s drive away.
Founded by a Dutch couple, the farm is currently run by their son, who keeps Angora goats producing mohair wool. Happy egg-laying hens roam around freely (so it’s best to keep your faithful canine companion on a lead while on site), and there is also a vegetable patch planted with potatoes, carrots and lettuce.
The nearby Vérenne river is a top spot to indulge in a bit of wild swimming – or fishing, if you prefer. And if you return from your angling expedition empty-handed, don’t fret: a fishmonger visits the farm every Friday morning. Keen mountain bikers might enjoy a two-wheeled exploration of the surrounding wooded hills, while hiking trails start directly from the site.
In addition to a toilet/shower block and a washing-up station, welcome on-site perks include a communal fridge and a launderette.

Local attractions
If slithering creatures are your thing, head to the Reptilarium du Larzac (40 minutes’ drive), where you can see pythons, turtles and crocodiles. The kids can take part in a 90-minute session during which they tour the reptile house and help feed the residents. Those who prefer warm-blooded creatures can pet dwarf goats, rabbits and guinea pigs in the farm.
The Lac du Salagou (55 minutes) is a reservoir surrounded by red sandstone hills. Hiking trails lead to various spectacular viewpoints, including an observation deck on the southern shore of the lake, while on the northern shore is an activity centre renting paddleboards, canoes and pedal boats.
In Montpellier (an hour and 15 minutes), the Jardin des Plantes runs guided visits exploring different themes – from medicinal plants, to desert plants and how they have adapted to their harsh habitats. Afterwards, take a leisurely stroll in Place de la Comédie, overlooked by an elegant theatre and lined with terrace cafés.
