  • Peaceful site among spectacular Ariege Pyrenees scenery
  • Direct access to a river for swimming and fishing
  • Heated pool, play area and games room
What a splendid setting: Camping Le Haut Salat, near Seix in the Ariège department, is right by a river for lazy days fishing and swimming – and in an area of the Languedoc-Roussillon-Midi-Pyrénées full of locales for canoeing, rafting, horse riding, Tour de France route cycling, and zipping down ski slopes in the winter months. (This is the time to take a look at the site pics.) Heritage from prehistory to more modern times is all around as well, from the ancient Niaux cave to the medieval castle at local town Seix and the museums and churches of pink city Toulouse. Lourdes and spa centre Caldea are also easy to get to from here. If you're not dangling your toes in the river on site, have a plunge or a leisurely float in the Haut Salat heated pool, or rouse yourself for a game of pétanque, ping pong or billiards at the site court and tables. The amenities include showers and toilet blocks suitable for disabled guests, a launderette and a washing-up area. Free wifi is available throughout. Camping Le Haut Salat also has a play area and a TV room. For eats and supplies, shops and restaurants are a 10-minute stroll away.

Local attractions

Thousands of years' worth of history are all around here, like at the vast and fab Cave of Niaux with its well-preserved prehistoric paintings, or the Château de Montségur, the fortress dating back to Cathar times. Also around and highly recommended is a long wander among the old buildings of the pink city of Toulouse, home of the world's first photography museum in the Galerie du Chateau d'Eau water tower, the spectacular Place du Capitole, the Canal du Midi and the biggest Romanesque church in Europe at the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Toulouse Cathedral. Other options are seeing the lynxes, wolves, bears and otters at the Pyrénées Animal Park at Argelès-Gazost; the mountain village of El Serrat, and the village of La Cortinada with the twelfth century Sant Martí de la Cortinada church. If you're up for some proper relaxing, steam along to southern Europe's biggest spa centre at Caldea, for indoor and outdoor Jacuzzis, saunas and Turkish baths, all surrounded by spectacular scenery.
