General
- Shaded park on the banks of the Hers river just outside Mazères
- An hour's drive from Toulouse, Carcassonne and the Pyrenees
- Swimming pool, fishing, kids' club and restaurant on site
A serene slice of riverside rural life, with the added bonus of being a leisurely amble from shops and restaurants? That’ll do nicely, merci beaucoup.
Ticking many boxes on wishlists for both chilling out and convenient amenities is Camping La Bastide, a five-hectare site on the banks of the Hers river. There are lots of lovely little shaded spots to relax in, and there’s direct access to the river for fishing or canoeing, and the town of Mazères is a 20-minute trot away.
Plonk down here for a little while and you’ll be within easy reach of all sorts of day trips – Toulouse, Carcassonne, Cathar castles and the Ariégoise Pyrenees Regional Natural Park are all within an hour or so’s drive.
Dawdling on site is an equally fine prospect, though. Splash around in the swimming pools, lob some balls about at the tennis court, or limber up your pétanque arm in prep for the tournaments that run here in high season. Pétanque not your forte? Perhaps you’ll be more at home joining in with a game of volleyball or settling in for a show or a themed dinner, all of which feature on the summer schedule.
Even lazy afternoon snoozes may be within your grasp, too – despatch the nippers off to the kids’ club for crafts, circus skills and games (3-6pm in high season) and you’ll have a couple of delicious hours all to yourself. Perhaps now’s the time to pop over to the restaurant for a cheeky glass of something on the open terrace – no rush though, it’s open all day for your brekkie croissants, your ice cream breaks and your tasty evening feasts.

Local attractions
Toulouse makes a great day trip for all sorts of visitors. There are loads of churches, museums and gardens to wander around, and the city’s also got a fab reputation for its eateries and markets. Tiddlers may prefer to focus on the space-themed Cité de l’Espace, hit the rides at Animaparc theme park or take a boat trip down the Garonne river.
Carcassonne is an equally excellent place for a day out – amble around the medieval citadel, take a trip on the Canal du Midi and gurn at the gargoyles over at Château Comtal.
Also recommended around the locale are the medieval bastide town of Mirepoix, the Cathar castles of Montségur and Roquefixade, and lung-stretching hikes in the Ariégoise Pyrenees Regional Natural Park.
