General

  • Lakeside site a few kilometres from Foix, the Ariège's main town
  • Fishing, boating, rafting and treetop adventure park
  • Pool and paddling pool with bar and sunloungers alongside

Ponder your mood of the morning when you awake at Camping du Lac near Foix in the Ariège
department of south-west France. Feeling adventurous? Then get out into the open for long adrenalised hours around this lakeside site (do, however, remember to get dressed first...).

An early adventurous option should be kayaking or rafting on the lake; if watery antics aren't your thing, make your way up high to the site's treetop adventure course. Canyoning and hiking are around in the area too, as is (for the truly intrepid), hang gliding above the spectacular landscapes of the Pyrenées Ariégoises Regional Nature Park.

Non, non and un big fat non? Peeps of a more placid persuasion have plenty of pursuits here too: the lake is a splendid spot for fishing and paddling, and the site has its own nicely-sized pool with sunbeds alongside and – how handy – a bar right next to the water.

Camping du Lac is a green and peaceful site, about five kilometres from the train station at Foix. The town market on Friday mornings is your destination for local produce; during the week, the restaurant team are on hand with bread and pastries from 7am, and meals, wine and beer in the evenings.

For yet more on-site action, kids have a summer club with sports activities, circus sessions, theatre, painting and crafts, part of a packed entertainment programme for all sizes that includes music, dances and sports tournaments – take your pick according to how adventurous you feel on any particular sunny day.

Please note

Entertainment and activities are available between 01/07 and 31/08.

The outdoor swimming pool is open between 15/06 and 15/09 (subject to weather conditions).

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

The restaurant is open between 15/06 and 15/09.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Great position on Bank of river. About 2mile walk(pavemented) or cycle ride to Foix . Campsite access to Riverside park. Good sized pitches most have electric hook up. Unisex facilities modern and kept very clean. Nice pool area. Free WiFi but need to be near reception to access it.

    Disliked:

There is a degree of road noise as on a busy route. Probably not noticeable in a motorhome but would be in a tent. We did not find the noise overly intrusive but needs mentioning if you are expecting a quiet site.

Local attractions

Hang gliding, canoeing, kayaking, rafting, canyoning, hiking, horse riding and exploring the local lakes, mountains and forests… all are around the region for adventurous sorts.

Many peaceful days are within easy reach too, like investigating the deep history of the Ariège region at the Parc de la Prehistoire de Tarascon-sur-Ariege prehistory museum 15 minutes' south: a splendid centre that should entertain even certified non-history types with its huge range of sights and activities including workshops, games, displays and events all based around the ancestral people who once lived in the famed Cave of Niaux. (Visit the cave too, for a torchlight trip underground among extensive galleries of prehistoric wall paintings, along the cavern's 18-kilometre length.)

The town of Foix a few kilometres away is home to a 12th-century castle and a medieval Old Town as well as the serene botanical garden of Les Épines de Lespinet, with Mediterranean vegetation, banana plants and many spiky cacti.
