General

  • Pyrénées Ariégeoises site within 45 minutes of Andorra
  • Within walking distance of the spa town of Ax-les-Thermes
  • Sauna, fitness room, pool, TV room, library and bar-restaurant

Just Pyrenees perfection... Holidaymakers of all tastes will be fully tended to at the peaceful, friendly and splendidly set site of Camping Le Malazéou, 700 metres above sea level in the  Ariège department: if you can't find what you seek nearby (unlikely), activities and sightseeing sojourns to keep you occupied for months are within day trip distance.

For example. You can stroll or pedal straight from the site along a scenic riverside path to reach the nearby town of Ax-les-Thermes, worth an amble around in itself but also a spot where you can hail a cable car to the Ax 3 Domaines ski resort or tackle the Stage 14 route of the 2010 Tour de France. The town is rightly famed too for its 60 or so thermal springs; test the warm waters at the 13th-centruy Bassin des Ladres, a registered historical monument.

Fishing is available along the nearby river if you'd like to take your time getting into town or spend a lazy day casting off, and you'll also be within easy reach of the House of Wolves animal park, Château de Lordat, the biggest cave in Europe, and Andorra about an hour's drive away.

But! There's a mighty amount to do all year round on this six-hectare site too – which could be mighty handy if you've exhausted your adventurous self skiing, cycling, hiking or sightseeing. To rest your weary bones, an infra-red sauna cabin is open all year round, as is a fitness room if you need to stretch your muscles just a bit more. A TV room and a library are around too for lazy indoor eves.

An outdoor heated pool is available for your leisure/sore-muscle soothing in the summer months: drift along in the water or sunbathe alongside while the Sunny Club sorts a wide range of activities including arts and crafts, paintballing and treetop adventuring courses for ages six to 13.

So you don't feel left out, entertainment is to hand for adults too: mosey along to the terrace of the bar-restaurant for concerts and shows, or hone your competitive side at the regular karaoke, quiz nights and tournaments.

Please note

The outdoor swimming pool is open between 01/06 and 30/09 (subject to weather conditions).

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act.

Electricity is metered on site at €0.15 per kWh and must be paid at check-out.

Lovely site with views up towards the Pyrenees, riverside location, friendly staff, pleasant lodges a good restaurant and a decent entertainment programme. Best feature - on site bunnies!

    Disliked:

Doesn't feel remote and is relatively busy - not the place for feeling very close to nature. We hadn't realised we would need to buy cleaning materials.

    Staff very friendly
    Good restaurant
Lovely area with walks directly from the campsite along the river to either the town in one direction or the supermarket in the other. There are also fishing lakes nearby.
Pet rabbits everywhere which the children loved!
Swimming pool accessible through gate to prevent children going in unaccompanied
Good active childrens club. We didn't use it but a lot of children did & it looked well run and fun
Cabin very clean, well equipped & beds comfy. Be aware that you will need to clean the cabin thoroughly at the end if your stay including the windows, frames, outdoor furniture etc. There is a guide poster on the wall of the cabin but it is only in French. Alternatively you can pay to have it cleaned

    Disliked:

Paying for wi-fi especially as it only covers 2 devices which cannot be used simultaneously
Small swimming pool, gets crowded & quite rowdy at times
Our cabin was very shaded so we missed eating breakfast & dinner in the sunshine.
Very small "personal" area around cabin, would have felt quite crowded if the cabins around us had been occupied
No shop on site although you can preorder bread & croissants etc to collect each morning from the bar

The town is also the starting point of the Orlu National Reserve, a spectacular setting where you should be able to spot the likes of marmots, bearded vultures and golden eagles among these high mountains. Several marked walking trails are around the reserve; pick up info at its office back in Ax-les-Thermes.

And for castles, the famed Château de Foix, the main structure of the Cathar castles, is set scenically above Foix town about 50 minutes away.

This part of south-west France is also famed for its vast caves and their prehistoric art: Lombrives cave, the biggest in Europe, is 25 minutes away for cavernous tours lasting from one to seven hours depending on your energy level; the Palaeolithic paintings of Niaux are within half an hour, just south of Foix, and Bédeilhac cave with its drawings, paintings and clay models is 40 minutes away.
