General

  • Friendly lakeside site with spectacular views over the Arédien hills
  • Swim, rent a pedal boat or fish for carp, trout, pike and roach
  • Owned by a chef who creates menus for the restaurant

It’s generally a safe bet to imagine that you’ll find a fair amount of decent food on your travels in France, but sometimes it can be a bit of a hike to get to the best local spots. Not so at Camping de Montréal 10 minutes' walk from Saint-Germain-les-Belles, where owner Hans also dons the chef’s hat and dishes up lush nosh to site guests – settle in the restaurant for a long-drawn-out dinner, munch snacks with a drink at the bar, or just grab a takeaway and trot back to your pitch.

And of the times that you’re not eating? Well, it’s up to you. You could simply choose to find a suitable spot to stretch out and do some digesting – and there are plenty of such spots, with the added bonus of some rather fab views over the Lac de Montréal and to the Arédien hills behind. Perhaps you could muster up enough energy to cast a rod into the lake and attempt to entice some trout, roach, pike or carp to take a bite (fishing licences are needed but they can be bought on site).

If you’re feeling rather more active (and/or wish to burn off a few calories ahead of the next feed), you could slip into the lake’s waters for a swim, rent a pedalo, or seek out more swimming at the open-air pool. Out of the water, tennis, basketball, volleyball and a playground are all on site too.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

The outdoor swimming pool is open between 15/05 and 31/10 (subject to weather conditions).

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Discount cards and gift vouchers cannot be applied to bookings made via Pitchup.com.

Hans and Lenie run a good site here. The location is very pretty and quiet. The toilets are spotless and, unusually for a campground in France, actually have toilet seats AND toilet paper AND soap. There is loads of hot water. The laundry worked fine and was reasonably priced and the internet is reasonably priced and worked very well on laptops. Our phones could not get the wifi signal for some reason. Hans runs a small restaurant at night and the food is good. I have no hesitation in telling you to stay here.

    Disliked:

Internet reception is variable depending on your location. On the other hand they don't over-charge.

Local attractions

The Millevaches en Limousin Regional Natural Park is the place for rural ramblings, half an hour's drive away. Walk to a waterfall, take one of the themed discovery walks, rent mountain bikes or head to Eymoutiers to hire canoes or kayaks for trips on the Vienne river.

Around half an hour away is Reynou zoo park, where five kilometres of paths run through a 100-hectare site, giving you the chance to see animals such as giraffes and lions up close, all in the grounds of a 19th-century château. For a château of a different variety, take the half-hour drive to Château de Châlucet, a medieval pile at the top of a hill (take decent shoes for the hike up).

Also around half an hour’s drive from the site is the town of Limoges, famed for its porcelain production – you can still visit porcelain shops here as well as seeing an ancient kiln next to the riverside path.
