  • French site from the owners of an award-winning UK park
  • Spectacular 8-hectare setting among riverbank, meadows and woodland
  • Outdoor covered dining area and covered barbecue area
This lot know exactly what they're doing – they've been blossoming for years as acclaimed site owners in Blighty. And now the talented team of award-winning Orchard Campsite have brought their clever approach across the Channel to Camping Moulin de la Barde, in peaceful Creuse countryside near Saint-Sulpice-le-Dunois. The Orchard crew picked a top spot for their first French venture here: the site is in spectacular setting in the valley of the Grande Creuse river, on eight hectares of meadow, woodland and riverbank. As the name might hint, there was once a working mill here too – the watermill belonging to the nearby Château de la Barde – remnants of which can still be seen on site. Guests can pick their own roomy pitches for lush river views, among scenes painted by Monet in his landscape art of 1889 at nearby Fresselines. The facilities are excellently thought out, with an outdoor covered dining area and covered woodfired barbecue area (with pizza oven) to sort eats, and indoor seating and a games room for lazy evenings or undercover days. And as it's France, pétanque is at your disposal too… Amenities on site include two toilets and two showers, with disabled access; there's also a washing-up area, charging facilities and chemical disposal.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: We have stayed at this site several times now . We always find it a restful quiet place , we have been lucky every time to have stunning weather . The dogs love water so have a river on site is a big bonus , also using one of the site boats to cross the river so we can walk to the local pub / restaurant is an added plus . The two toilet/ shower rooms are always nice and clean , not sure how they will cope when the site is busy . A lovely basic site that we will continue to use .

Disliked: Not a dislike more an observation, extra toilets will be needed in the busy season

Electric optional grass pitch

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Lucky for us this was our second visit this year. I loved it the first time, and it didn't fail to deliver. The pitches are a really good size, well maintained, by the side of a river. It oozes peace and tranquility. Where you can get of the rat race and relax. Sean and Lisa manage the site perfectly, and are very friendly and helpful. Overall it's well worth a visit, and has truly captured my heart, we,ll certainly be returning next year

Disliked: Having to leave

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: If I could create the perfect campsite, this would be it! It’s the most beautiful riverside setting, so peaceful and relaxing. The river is perfect for swimming and paddling in the site kayak, and I loved watching the resident kingfishers fishing as I sat at my pitch. The pitches are spacious and unmarked, and you can choose your spot. The site was never full while I was there, but I don’t think it would ever feel crowded. Lisa and Sean are fantastic hosts, so welcoming and friendly and they work hard to keep the facilities clean and the site in great condition. They even deliver your order of fresh bread to your pitch each morning! It’s a very rural area, so there’s not lots to see and do in the area - but that’s just the perfect excuse to sit back, relax, and enjoy this beautiful place!

Disliked: Having to leave at the end of my stay!

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Beautiful scenery, extremely helpful hosts and very, very quiet. Our fairly large (8.5 mtr) motorhome had no problems getting on the site. The pitch was very large, facing the river. The hosts couldn’t do enough for us. Checking with us before arriving, visiting us during our stay to make sure all was well. We will definitely return.

Local attractions

Oft hailed as 'France’s ‘deepest secret’, the lush Limousin department of the Creuse is known for its scenic green countryside, warm summers and centuries of history. The region around Moulin de la Barde is close to the pretty village of La Celle Dunoise and the valley of the Trois Lacs (Three Lakes) for walking and cycling. A browse around the local brocantes or vide greniers is also much recommended – part flea market, part garage sale, these events are where residents line the streets to display their goods for sale, or to look for their own bargain. For towns, drive half an hour to La Souterraine, the ancient town founded by abbey monks and with an 11th-century church that was once a popular stopoff point for pilgrims on their way to Santiago De Compostela. Guéret, 35 minutes' drive away, has the nearest hypermarket and big shopping centre, and also has Les Loups de Chabrières animal park that's home to some of France's few remaining wolves. Aubusson, the 'tapestry capital' on the Grande Creuse river and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is about an hour and 10 minutes' drive away.
