General

  • French site from the owners of an award-winning UK park
  • Spectacular 8-hectare setting among riverbank, meadows and woodland
  • Outdoor covered dining area and covered barbecue area

This lot know exactly what they're doing – they've been blossoming for years as acclaimed site owners in Blighty. And now the talented team of award-winning Orchard Campsite have brought their clever approach across the Channel to Camping Moulin de la Barde, in peaceful Creuse countryside near Saint-Sulpice-le-Dunois.

The Orchard crew picked a top spot for their first French venture here: the site is in spectacular setting in the valley of the Grande Creuse river, on eight hectares of meadow, woodland and riverbank. As the name might hint, there was once a working mill here too – the watermill belonging to the nearby Château de la Barde – remnants of which can still be seen on site.

Guests can pick their own roomy pitches for lush river views, among scenes painted by Monet in his landscape art of 1889 at nearby Fresselines. The facilities are excellently thought out, with an outdoor covered dining area and covered woodfired barbecue area (with pizza oven) to sort eats, and indoor seating and a games room for lazy evenings or undercover days. And as it's France, pétanque is at your disposal too…

Amenities on site include two toilets and two showers, with disabled access; there's also a washing-up area, charging facilities and chemical disposal.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Discount cards and gift vouchers cannot be applied to bookings made via Pitchup.com.

LOVE LOVE LOVE! We spent a fantastic short break here. …11/09/2020

    LOVE LOVE LOVE!
We spent a fantastic short break here. Absolutely nothing to fault. The setting is stunning and the hosts providing a relaxed and very friendly atmosphere. There are no marked pitches and sturdy wooden tables and benches are dotted around for us. Not only that, a wood-fired BBQ and Pizza oven area is available – and the wood is free! There is even a large fridge for visitors’ use, again free. We made use of the- again free – dingy and canoe whilst we were there as well as the lovely coffee machine in the communal games room/entrance which was just Eur1 to buy, with an “Honesty Box” to put your payment in. There is nowhere else we have been on our several camping trips recently that provided so much.
I must add the usual comments about facilities – the showers were excellent, large, clean, with plenty of hot water. We were also walked around and explained how to use the disinfectant spray to ensure the area was COVID-19 safe.
The location is perfect, right on the Creuze. Lots of established trees for shade if needed and lovely touches about the place – old, moss-covered mill stones and troughs dotted about, a hammock, little tasteful little statues. Wildlife abounds. So many birds, bats at night and I even spotted kingfishers on the river.
I cannot recommend this campsite enough. I would also like to respond to the comment below regarding air-conditioning units being used whilst the door is open. In actual fact the noise is from a large industrial fridge where the hosts chilled soft drinks and ice-creams for sale, again with an Honesty Box. The scum bubbles in the river were present much further upstream when we canoed that way and walked along the banks, so do NOT emanate from the campsite.
If you are looking for an tranquil and idyllic camp site with a mass of free facilities, then this is your place. Thank you to Linda and Allen – we shall most definitely come again and recommend you to all our fellow camping friends.

We really loved this camping for being so "out of the world", pure nature. Sean welcomed us, made us feel comfortable and got us breakfast every morning. We also enjoyed the many free goodies (fridge, canoe use, wooden table...). It was like a dream to start the holidays with!

    Disliked:

The only thing we disliked (and hope it will be improved in the future) was a certain non-environmental friendly setting. Air cooling running all day in the main building while windows open and outside close to 40. Some doubts about how much the water from sanitary is filtered before being led into the river (you could see little bubbles on the water and foam when someone was taking a shower).

From the manager...

Thank you for the positive comments, so glad to hear you made full use of all we offer to our guests. That is just what we like to hear.

We would just like to correct you however, we do not actually have an air cooling unit! We think what you saw was maybe the large fridge for the ice creams and soft drinks? And we would also like to reassure you that water from the showers doesn't pollute the river.

Thank you for your visit, we are happy you enjoyed a dream start to your holidays!

What an amazing , beautiful site. Wish that we had planned to stay longer. It is very rural and arrived late as travelled from UK. Wanted to pitch in the light so thought that we would pitch then find dinner. Delay through Paris meant we arrived an hour later than planned so everything closed and a long drive to the town . Owner made us an emergency dinner , cold drinks , everything we needed. Just fabulous. Indoor areas meant that even in bad weather it would have been perfect . The only disturbance were the owls calling in the night. Didn’t have chance to try WiFi or any activities in the area but talking to other campers , great for canoeing and mountain biking .

Local attractions

Oft hailed as 'France’s ‘deepest secret’, the lush Limousin department of the Creuse is known for its scenic green countryside, warm summers and centuries of history. The region around Moulin de la Barde is close to the pretty village of La Celle Dunoise and the valley of the Trois Lacs (Three Lakes) for walking and cycling.

A browse around the local brocantes or vide greniers is also much recommended – part flea market, part garage sale, these events are where residents line the streets to display their goods for sale, or to look for their own bargain.

For towns, drive half an hour to La Souterraine, the ancient town founded by abbey monks and with an 11th-century church that was once a popular stopoff point for pilgrims on their way to Santiago De Compostela. Guéret, 35 minutes' drive away, has the nearest hypermarket and big shopping centre, and also has Les Loups de Chabrières animal park that's home to some of France's few remaining wolves.

Aubusson, the 'tapestry capital' on the Grande Creuse river and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is about an hour and 10 minutes' drive away.
