  • French site from the owners of an award-winning UK park
  • Spectacular 8-hectare setting among riverbank, meadows and woodland
  • Outdoor covered dining area and covered barbecue area
This lot know exactly what they're doing – they've been blossoming for years as acclaimed site owners in Blighty. And now the talented team of award-winning Orchard Campsite have brought their clever approach across the Channel to Camping Moulin de la Barde, in peaceful Creuse countryside near Saint-Sulpice-le-Dunois. The Orchard crew picked a top spot for their first French venture here: the site is in spectacular setting in the valley of the Grande Creuse river, on eight hectares of meadow, woodland and riverbank. As the name might hint, there was once a working mill here too – the watermill belonging to the nearby Château de la Barde – remnants of which can still be seen on site. Guests can pick their own roomy pitches for lush river views, among scenes painted by Monet in his landscape art of 1889 at nearby Fresselines. The facilities are excellently thought out, with an outdoor covered dining area and covered woodfired barbecue area (with pizza oven) to sort eats, and indoor seating and a games room for lazy evenings or undercover days. And as it's France, pétanque is at your disposal too… Amenities on site include two toilets and two showers, with disabled access; there's also a washing-up area, charging facilities and chemical disposal.

Local attractions

Oft hailed as 'France’s ‘deepest secret’, the lush Limousin department of the Creuse is known for its scenic green countryside, warm summers and centuries of history. The region around Moulin de la Barde is close to the pretty village of La Celle Dunoise and the valley of the Trois Lacs (Three Lakes) for walking and cycling. A browse around the local brocantes or vide greniers is also much recommended – part flea market, part garage sale, these events are where residents line the streets to display their goods for sale, or to look for their own bargain. For towns, drive half an hour to La Souterraine, the ancient town founded by abbey monks and with an 11th-century church that was once a popular stopoff point for pilgrims on their way to Santiago De Compostela. Guéret, 35 minutes' drive away, has the nearest hypermarket and big shopping centre, and also has Les Loups de Chabrières animal park that's home to some of France's few remaining wolves. Aubusson, the 'tapestry capital' on the Grande Creuse river and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is about an hour and 10 minutes' drive away.
