  • Well-presented lakeside site 25 minutes' walk from La Souterraine
  • Limoges, Guéret and 'Valley of the Painters' within 45 minutes' drive
  • Outdoor pool, fishing, pony rides, shop and high season activities
Wash your stresses and strains away at this lakeside site in the scenic Limousin region. Sashaying off to Camping L'Aquarelle is a restful experience indeed, as here there are all kinds of gentle pursuits to try. Fishing, kids' pony rides and a tiptop outdoor pool make for truly tonic times on site, while the centre of the attractive town of La Souterraine is a 25-minute stroll away. Set on the banks of the Étang du Cheix, Camping L'Aquarelle is also a nifty launchpad for seeing other Limousin lakes, as well as forests, an arboretum, a wolf park and oodles of footpaths and bike trails… In short, there's a vast range of open-air options around here to keep guests entertained for many a day, with the bigger towns of Guéret and Limoges both within 45 minutes' drive if there's call for city explores. The site is also near several major roads, making Camping L'Aquarelle a highly pleasing pitstop for those on long-distance drives. This nifty location goes hand in hand with a brilliant bunch of facilities to help keep life running smoothly, including daily fresh bread deliveries, a laundry room, free wifi and a food shop (handy for picking up bits and pieces you forgot to buy at La Souterraine's weekly market). What more could you ask for? Peut-être a brasserie restaurant with high-season entertainment? Et oui, that's also sorted here.

Electric optional grass and gravel tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: Hot showers. Was a pool though we didn’t have chance to use it.

Disliked: Staff not overly friendly. Didn’t give us a WiFi code until asked. Better pitches seemed available but weren’t offered to us. Pitch wasn’t flat and quite small.

Electric optional grass and gravel tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: Nothing

Disliked: Tiny pitch delineated by huge boulders, unable to park van and car side by side, only two showers available. Despite the cover photo no pitches actually overlooked the lake so totally misrepresented.

Local attractions

With spots like Camping L'Aquarelle about it's no wonder so many holidaymakers head to the Limousin region each year – but don't worry, newcomers have ample space to spread out in. For typical local landscapes, prep your paintbrushes (or smartphone camera, if you're packing light) and mosey around the 'Valley of the Painters' (30 minutes' drive), a scenic spot dotted with willows, mills and sleepy stone buildings. City shenanigans of several flavours are also within comfortable reach of the site: Limoges (45 minutes), a long-standing hub of porcelain manufacturing, channels ornate and creative vibes, while Guéret (30 minutes) has some more modern galleries and visitor centres to explore. This latter spot is also surrounded by hills where you can get up to all manner of energetic sports or visit the Loups de Chabrières animal park (40 minutes) and watch wolves slinking through the trees. Feel like sauntering through saplings minus the long-fanged beasts? Then trot off to the Arboretum de la Sédelle (25 minutes). Some history? Try Le Scénovision, a museum of village life that's ditched traditional exhibits to lay on a show that combines theatre, sounds and smells.
