  • Shaded site next to a stunning 22-hectare lake with a beach
  • A five-minute drive from Guéret and the national forest of Chabrières
  • Play area, watersports and wifi; hiking and biking trails nearby
On the lookout for a peaceful site in central France? Have a craving to visit the Creuse? Camping de Courtille could be just the ticket: this shaded spot is located next to the serene green waters of a local lake and close to the woodland wonder that is the national Chabrières forest. The nearby town of Guéret (five minutes' drive) is well set up to welcome visitors to the region and is home to a handy tourist office where you can get hints and tips on the best places to walk, cycle, swim or fish. Guided tours of the surrounding area can also be sorted here. The sizeable body of water adjacent to your new base covers a sprawling 22 hectares; plenty of picnic spots line its banks, and there's a beach for bathers too (with lifeguards keeping a beady eye on things in July and August). Watersports like sailing, windsurfing, paddleboarding and canoeing are all available here too. On site, guests have access to nifty facilities like wifi, a washing-up area and a play area. Feel free to set up a barbecue if you fancy cooking over coals; to stock up on grub to grill (or any other holiday essentials), head to the supermarket 10 minutes' drive away on the outskirts of Guéret.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: The site is very well organised and very tidy at all times. The amenities are plenty of and they're kept clean. There are more than enough shower blocks and toilets, and the washing up area is very nicely organised. Best one so far I have experienced. There are bbq for communal use, and they were cleaned regularly by staff. The pitches are a very good size and there is no difference between tent or caravan pitch. They gave enough space for tents and outdoor dinning/entertaining. The layout is really good and very well accessible too. The lake is on your doorstep and it has inflatable to play on. Unfortunately lake was contaminated and we could not use, but still the views are stunning. The grounds around lake are kept super tidy and short for everyone to enjoy. Morning yoga in the green by the lake was a treat. There is a track around the lake for a run or cycle. Really good. The owners are very friendly and very helpful. Told us about the other place to swim in the area, and we truly loved it. It required driving but it was worth it. True gem. Le Bourg d'Hem is very remote, the beach is good and it's all sandy. There is also a very affordable restaurant there. So easy one can spent a whole day there.

Disliked: No one's fault of the contamination, but we'd like to be informed that the local lake is out of use. For this reason I belive campsite would benefit from the swimming pool and there is ple ty of space for its instalation. I have to say on the day of arrival it was very hot and all we were hoping for was to jump in in the lake to cool off after setting the tents. Talking to the owners next day saved the day, but still that first impression was lingering.

Liked: very helpful staff gave lots of information on places to visit.

Disliked: that we were not advised when we booked that the lake for swimming + other activities in the water we wanted to do, was closed. we drove a long way to get to this site + it was mid 30''s. very disappointing.

Liked: Great facilities, friendly owners and very clean. The campsite is at the side of a lake with all facilities for a great holiday. Safe for kids and secure. Closure of the vehicle access gates at 8pm makes for a peaceful night. Will definitely come back.

Local attractions

Guéret's very own Museum of Art and Archeology is a five-minute drive away, as is the funky municipal cultural centre. The surrounding countryside is home to heaps of well-marked paths and trails (enquire at the Guéret tourist office for more info), but if you fancy really getting lost for a change you can try out the Labyrinthe Géant des Monts de Guéret, a jumbo-sized local maze (10 minutes). Now you're fully tuned in to the call of the wild, you might feel brave enough to visit the wolves that lurk around these parts. Keep your eyes peeled for these furtive creatures as you tour the local conservation centre (20 minutes), which is home to a variety of different species. Having seen these noble beasts roaming in an ancient forest, you might also start to feel a bit blue-blooded yourself. If so, head to the nearby Château de Jouillat (20 minutes), whose tall and imposing towers can be seen for miles around. If you don't mind the hour's drive, a trip to Limoges is well worth considering. The Limousin capital is perhaps most famous for its porcelain factories, but make sure to take in sights like Saint Étienne Cathedral, Saint Martial Bridge and the botanical gardens too.
