General

  • 110 metres from a lakeside beach and close to a watersports centre
  • Excellent English spoken on site
  • Heated pool, homemade local cuisine and loads of summer activities

How, dear France-bound Pitchupper, is your français? Absolutely tiptop, merci beaucoup, because you are in fact a French native? All right-ish, because although you're not French, you did learn a little of le lingo at school? Or at the 'thumbing desperately through a phrasebook when trying to order a beer/ buy stamps/ enquire où est le métro' level bemoaned by many?

If your language skills are nowhere native, fret not re your forthcoming French trip, s'il vous plait, as Marion and Thierry at Camping du Lac de Bournazel have you sorted. Excellent Anglais is spoken at this warm and friendly site, so you can request top tips to your heart's content about what's around the region (rather a lot), or have no language-based wobbles about joining in with what's going on at and around the site.

That's rather a lot too. Camping du Lac de Bournazel is in the green department of Correze, a kilometre and a half from the lively local town of Seilhac. It has direct access to a 32-hectare sandy beach within a couple of minutes' walk for fishing, waterskiing and safe family swimming (the waters are lifeguarded in summer). Kayaking, rowing, wakeboarding and paddleboarding are all accessible nearby.

On site, there's enough to do for all ages to keep everyone occupied from dawn to dusk and beyond, including free activities from sports tournaments to dances arranged for kids and teenagers in high season, and regular events for grownups such as evening music and food tasting.

There's a pool too, heated, open from May to September and surrounded by a solarium for lazy days sunbathing. Overlooking the pool is the snack bar terrace, with a full menu of drinks and bites (think Rocamadour pizza and Limousin duck and beef) served in high season from Thierry's kitchen. And if you're a reader as well as an eater, accompany your eats and drinks with a tome or two from the site library: there's plenty to pick from in English as well as in French.

Welcome drinks are held every Monday, a Correzien communal meal arranged once a week, and local merchants visit the site regularly if you want to learn more about the local cuisine. All activities apart from the Correzien meal are free, and all end at 1130pm at the latest so you can catch the correct amount of snooze time before getting ready to get stuck in all over again the next day.

Camping du Lac de Bournazel also has bike hire, a TV room and board games for guests' use. A new toilet and shower block was added in 2016, which includes a nursery area with small-sized showers as well as adapted toilets and basins for younger guests.

Please note

The outdoor swimming pool is open between 01/05 and 30/09 (subject to weather conditions).

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

The site caters for families (immediate members) and couples only - bookings from all other forms of groups are not accepted.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

    Peaceful
    Nice flat landscaped pitches
Lovely little swimming pool (only had time for a little paddle though)
Reception / shop with essential items and local information
Lovely staff very friendly and helpful (Better English spoken than I can speak French)
    Showers clean and tidy
Toilets clean and tidy (might want to take your own toilet paper though)
Access fob for vehicle security gate

    Disliked:

Washing up area clean and tidy but not under cover, didn't affect us but I wouldn't be keen to wash dishes in the rain. Also, make sure you wash up before dark. No lights over the sinks.

You are able to refreeze your ice packs in the shop. Be aware they will charge you 1.80 euro for this

Local attractions

With luck, France-bound Pitchupper, you've left yourself quite a bit of time to explore the surroundings too, whether that's ambling around the lake or local village, or driving into the countryside for day trips at world-famed French attractions like Rocamaour.

Waterskiing, kayaking, rowing, wakeboarding and paddleboarding are all available at the Tiki Wake Park watersports centre, a short distance from the site at Seilhac. Archery classes and tree climbing are around to tackle in summer.
Local villages well worth a trip are nearby Seilhac within a kilometre and a half, with model railway running from May to September; Tulle, 15 minutes' drive away, and Brive La Gaillarde and Collonges la Rouge, between 40 and 45 minutes away.

The famed medieval city of Sarlat is within 90 minutes. Rocamaour and the Gouffre de Padirac are both about an hour and 10 minutes' drive away.
