  • Small and peaceful Dordogne site a kilometre from Astaillac
  • Gouffre de Padirac 25 minutes' drive; 45 minutes to Rocamadour
  • Outdoor kitchen and dining space provided; breakfast baskets to order
Nature is all around when you stay at Vallon de Laborie – birdsong, crickets and cow bells form the soundtrack to this small-scale site in a highly peaceful corner of the Dordogne Valley, a kilometre from the village of Astaillac. Here on the border of the Lot and Corrèze regions is a location that the owners describe as ‘rural but not remote’, as it’s got easy access to all sorts of attractions and activities around the Dordogne (with the banks of the mighty river itself about three kilometres away). The aim of the folk that run the place has always been to provide a warm welcome in a fabulously calm location, and accordingly they always keep guest numbers on the low side so everyone has plenty of peace and space. They’ve provided all the essentials for a hassle-free outdoor break as well – guests have access to shared outdoor kitchen and dining areas as well as well-kept shower and toilet facilities. Breakfast baskets (packed with local produce) are available to order, and there are hammocks strung between the trees where you can hang out while you digest your meals (or just spend some quiet time with your book…) Although this location feels rather secluded, in fact it’s only a 10-minute drive to Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne for things like a supermarket, a weekly market, cafés, bakeries and restaurants. Several local villages also have markets to visit, along with pop-up markets on summer evenings. For days out, it’s also easy to get to places like Rocamadour, Collonges-la-Rouge and Gouffre de Padirac or stay closer to home for low-key days of hiking, cycle rides or fishing.

If Google Maps sends you off west on the unmarked track from Cassagne, ignore it. Instead come from the north, from Conques, heading south on the tarmac road called Route de Laborie.

Local attractions

This is the Dordogne, so naturally you’ll need to spend some time around/in/on the river before too long. A good place to start is Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne (10 minutes’ drive), where you can hire bikes or canoes or join boat trips on a classic gabare. Paddleboarding, fishing and open-water swimming are also options nearby, or you could play a round at Golf Puy d’Arnac (15 minutes). The area is well known for its châteaux as well, and the one to visit around here is Château de Castelnau-Bretenoux (20 minutes), a fortified family home full of art, tapestries and elegant furniture. For more traditional and historic buildings, wander around the villages of Carennac (15 minutes), Curemonte (20 minutes) and Loubressac (25 minutes). Rocamadour (45 minutes), with its castle built into the cliffside, is well worth a visit. There are great sights underground too, if you head off to the cave complex les Grottes de Presque or the subterranean rivers and lakes of Gouffre de Padirac (both 25 minutes).
