  • In the grounds of a 13th-century château on the banks of the Dordogne
  • Shop, bar, heated pool and boat hire
  • 10 minutes' drive from the medieval town of Argentat
You could imagine you'd slipped back in time at Camping Le Gibanel. Stroll past the golden stones of the château to your boat and spend a day fishing, deep in the wooded seclusion of the Dordogne. For all its ancient qualities the facilities here are tiptop: you can dine at the château looking your best, as the 24-hour laundry has irons alongside washers and dryers. (No more tent-head either: hairdryers are in the washrooms.) The heated pool provides an alternative to a dip in the river. If you do suffer from watery wanderlust though, you can hire boats and buy fishing permits right on site. If you don't catch anything, fill up instead on groceries and bread from the shop, as well as on snacks at the bar. A playground will keep the littlest ones amused, while older ones might be drawn to the wifi. Families can get together for sporting antics on the boules court or at the ping pong table and there's a gym for more serious keep-fit. Argentat (10 minutes away by car) has supermarkets, shops and riverside restaurants.

Local attractions

Medieval Argentat is home to the Splash Center Aquarecréatif, with flumes, chutes and slides around a lifeguarded pool and a paddling pool. Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne (30 minutes) is a popular spot to hire mountain bikes and various river craft; you can tour the area with guides or on your own. An hour away, Martel is the starting point for a heritage ride on a lovingly restored steam train, a popular way to take in the local countryside. It's also home to a reptile zoo, where you can meet alligators and mambas (if that's your poison…). The world-famed clifftop village of Rocamadour is an hour and 20 minutes away. After visiting this ancient pilgrim site, wander through the Forêt des Singes, where over a hundred monkeys swing freely through the boughs. Around both, the Parc Régional des Causses de Quercy occupies much of the surrounding countryside: rich in wildlife, it's also home to ancient mines and painted caves. For the ultimate Palaeolithic art experience, the caves of Lascaux are an hour and a half away. The exhibition there is a must-see, but other caves in the region (at Cougnac, an hour and 45 minutes away) let you get much closer to the paintings and our prehistoric past.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass pitch (water view)

Liked: The location by lake/lagoon. Pretty old chateau. Reasonable pool.

Disliked: Appalling state of shared loo block facilities. The site had failed to get enough toilet paper for the paper distribution pods in each loo, so had to replace with loose toilet rolls which ignorant and selfish campers then stole (presumably so that at least THEY could wipe their bottoms, never mind everyone else) leaving everyone else helpless and having to improvise. Also, the plumbing was in need of attention. One loo kept over-running (wasting precious water in time of scarcity). No maintenance taking place, presumably because you can't get the staff? The site seemed to be run by teenagers who didn't have a clue what to do. Evening entertainment was very loud (karaoke) which went on until 11.30pm or later most evenings. The shop was very poorly stocked with fresh items such as milk. I understand items had been ordered but just didn't arrive. Overall impression very disappointing, given that it was recommended by friends.

Liked: Fantastic setting. Good pool and right by lake.

Disliked: Check in a little confused , tree canopy not suitable for motorhome needs trimming. Toilet block ok but needs a deep clean and better housekeeping. Restaurant a real disappointment, such a lovely setting and such awful cold food with hapless staff , no idea of food service.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass pitch (water view)

Liked: The view and position of pitch

Disliked: The long uncut grass everywhere! The blocked toilets! Which were ongoing! Sadly a run down site! Which sadly is such a shame . It could be wonderful , with some tender loving care. Staff in hiding I think!
