Gibanel castle on the water

General

  • In the grounds of a 13th-century château on the banks of the Dordogne
  • Shop, bar, heated pool and boat hire
  • 10 minutes' drive from the medieval town of Argentat

You could imagine you'd slipped back in time at Camping Le Gibanel. Stroll past the golden stones of the château to your boat and spend a day fishing, deep in the wooded seclusion of the Dordogne.

For all its ancient qualities the facilities here are tiptop: you can dine at the château looking your best, as the 24-hour laundry has irons alongside washers and dryers. (No more tent-head either: hairdryers are in the washrooms.)

The heated pool provides an alternative to a dip in the river. If you do suffer from watery wanderlust though, you can hire boats and buy fishing permits right on site. If you don't catch anything, fill up instead on groceries and bread from the shop, as well as on snacks at the bar.

A kids' playground will keep the littlest ones amused, while older ones might be drawn to the TV room and the wifi. Families can get together for sporting antics on the boules court or at the ping pong table and there's a gym for more serious keep-fit.

Argentat (10 minutes away by car) has supermarkets and shops and riverside restaurants that will welcome you –even if you haven't ironed your outfit...

Surroundings were beautiful... pitching was easy ..

    Disliked:

Very very quiet ... no one around at all was not noted in booking as said there was only 10 spaces left so we thought it would still be quite busy ... the restaurant and bar was shut on second day.. all the other things were closed ... pool was. Open that was it .. toilets very dated... we were really looking forward to camping on this site but left a day early very disappointed and let down... should say on website that it’s very quiet and not make you feel it’s busy and lively .. false advertising

Sites with fantastic views and direct access to the lake for swimming and activities. Excellent service at the accueil.

    Disliked:

Awful karaoke pounded out eurotrash until at least 1am. It was a shame the beautiful situation was ruined by the noise.

Local attractions

Medieval Argentat is home to the Splash Center Aquarecréatif, with flumes, chutes and slides around a lifeguarded pool and a paddling pool.

Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne (30 minutes) is a popular spot to hire mountain bikes and various river craft; you can tour the area with guides or on your own.

An hour away, Martel is the starting point for a heritage ride on a lovingly restored steam train, a popular way to take in the local countryside. It's also home to a reptile zoo, where you can meet alligators and mambas (if that's your poison...).

The world-famed clifftop village of Rocamadour is an hour and 20 minutes away. After visiting this ancient pilgrim site, wander through the Forêt des Singes, where over a hundred monkeys swing freely through the boughs. Around both, the Parc Régional des Causses de Quercy occupies much of the surrounding countryside: rich in wildlife, it's also home to ancient mines and painted caves.

For the ultimate Palaeolithic art experience, the caves of Lascaux are an hour and a half away. The exhibition there is a must-see, but other caves in the region (at Cougnac an hour and 45 minutes away) let you get much closer to the paintings and our prehistoric past.
