  • Set in a pinewood a kilometre from the fortress at Salses-le-Château
  • A 10-kilometre drive from the beach of Le Barcarè
  • Outdoor pool with seated space; café with spacious terrace
Hole up at Camping Le Bois de Pins to be within walking distance of a famed French fortress, half an hour's drive from Spain and from Mediterranean beaches – and in a handsome pine forest a few minutes from the fishing and shellfish farming of Salses/Leucate lake. Based about 10 kilometres from the sands of Le Barcarè, Le Bois de Pins is in a pinewood on a hillside in the Pyrénées-Orientales town of Salses-le-Château. The famed fortress nearby is the Fort de Salses, built by Spain towards the end of the 15th century and captured by the French 150 or so years later: its illustrious history can be investigated within a kilometre of the site (you can hire bikes from the Le Bois de Pins team). Le Bois de Pins is a mid-sized site 20 to 25 kilometres from the Cathar castles. It has an outdoor pool with seated space alongside (parasols included if you seek some shade from the summer sun); a pétanque court, a games room, a playground and table football. The café has a spacious terrace and a takeaway service; there's also a mini market selling a good variety of groceries.

What customers say

Visitors praise the extremely friendly and welcoming staff, clean facilities, and enjoyable atmosphere at the bar and restaurant. The campsite offers stunning panoramic views and pleasant shaded pitches. While some guests found the access roads and pitches uneven or steep, and noted issues with insects and dust, the management is actively addressing these concerns. The pools and children's play areas are popular.

From the manager: Merci pour votre note de 10 et pour ce retour ! 🌲

Electric optional forest floor touring pitch

Liked The toilet block was reasonably clean and modern

Disliked I booked this site for its swimming pool, restaurant and shop onsite. The swimming pool had no water in it. The restaurant and bar were not open, only open Fri and Sat evenings if enough people apparently. The shop was closed. The site is steep and difficult to navigate in a small campervan. It is a long steep climb to the toilet block on foot, very difficult at night. It is also right next to a motorway.

From the manager: Hello,
We have 2 pools on site, one is open and heated at the moment. Yesterday evening the pool was full of people.
The bar in the front of the reception is open as well.
The restaurant is only open in the weekend for the moment. In July and August it will be open every day.
The door of the shop is closed because of the airconditioning but not locked. You can just open the door to get in.
The campsite is steef because we are located on a hill.
We are very sad that you did not ask us for the pool and the other facilities. We are here to help you and make your stay as nice as we can..

From the manager: Un grand merci pour ce superbe avis ! ✨

Liked Friendly welcoming, detailed check in, all the different country flags outside plus the LGBT flag! Felt very inclusive and welcoming.
Location! Stunning views of Pyrenees mountains, vineyards and sea. Not too far from town!
The restaurant and the shop were great!! But we loved the bar the most! Spent 2 nights up the bar! Great atmosphere.
The owners were super friendly we had great chats with them and our dogs got on well with their dogs too!
Showers are decent!! Proper showers with proper shower tray. And the toilets have toilet seats unlike most of France. Everything so clean and well maintained.
No gnats!! We just came from Arles where there were millions! Here we see 1 or 2 but not an issue at all.

Disliked Nothing we disliked

From the manager: Pennie and Karlie,
Thank you so much for your wonderful and detailed review!
We’re delighted to hear that you felt welcomed and included from the moment you arrived—that’s something very important to us. It’s great that you enjoyed the views, the location, and especially the atmosphere at the bar 😊.
Your kind words about the team mean a lot, and we’re glad you had the chance to share some nice moments together—both you and your dogs! We also really appreciate your comments on the cleanliness and facilities; we work hard to keep everything comfortable and well maintained.
And we’re happy you could enjoy your stay without too many gnats—that definitely makes a difference!
It would be a pleasure to welcome you back again soon 🍃

Local attractions

Fort de Salses, within easy ambling or cycling distance, is pretty well known in these parts, seeing about 100,000 visitors a year. Its striking setting is def worth a visit: wander around under your own steam or book a guided tour in French, English, German, Spanish or Catalan. More history can be had at the department capital of Perpignan (20 kilometres), or at the Cathar castles of Château de Quéribus and Château de Peyrepertuse, 20 and 25 kilometres away. Even more anciently, a drive of 40 kilometres will take you to a delve around the Gorges of Galamus, a protected area carved out among the Fenouillèdes massif's limestone cliffs. Watersports are a popular pastime too for Le Bois de Pins guests, either from the beaches of Port Barcarès, Leucate and Franqui 10 to 15 or so kilometres away, or at the Salses/Leucate lake within about four kilometres. For splashing watery days, Aqualand is 30 kilometres from the site; for fully adrenalised ones, you can tackle canyoning at the Galamus gorges between April and September.
