Pitches

  • Campervan pitches at a Pyréneés-Orientales vineyard with Canigó views
  • Saint-Nazaire 10 minutes’s drive; Perpignan and the beach 15 minutes
  • Winery tastings and tours available; summer barbecues and concerts
Well, what a spot for campervans. As if stopping off overnight at a Pyréneés-Orientales vineyard is not enough, the small and simple site at Mas Alart has views over the multiple peaks of Canigó mountain and it’s also only 15 minutes’ drive from Mediterranean Sea beaches. Facilities are fairly scant at this family-owned (since 1897, no less) wine estate – there’s drinking water and electric hook-ups available – but nobody minds when they’re surrounded by vines and can book tastings and guided tours of the cellars and winery. In high summer, there’s also a schedule of concerts and evening meals (including traditional Catalan barbecues) that you can book for an extra charge, while the on-site shop sells Mas Alart red and white wines as well as local artisan produce like cured meats and cheese. You’re also welcome to explore the wine estate for yourselves, on foot or by bike, and as dogs are welcome, you can exercise your canine pals too as long as they are kept on a lead on site. The small town of Saleilles (10 minutes’ walk) has a supermarket and a couple of bars and restaurants if you feel like exploring the local dining scene.

What customers say

This vineyard campsite offers a peaceful rural escape with beautiful mountain views and excellent value. Guests particularly enjoyed the wine tasting and the opportunity to purchase wine. While basic, with only a toilet available, the site is praised for its spacious pitches, friendly staff, and convenient location for cycling to the coast, with a Lidl nearby. Some guests experienced issues with access via GPS, noting unmade roads, though the manager clarifies the access is straightforward and advises calling for guidance. A minor concern was raised about the water taste.

Liked Everything. The peace of the location with the wine tasting the ‘cherry on top’. Buying a variety of their wines made a great souvenir though they won’t last as long as the memory 😉

Liked Fantastic rural site on a vineyard. Plenty of room for your pitch and within cycling distance of the coast and beaches. A Lidl supermarket is a short distance away. Lovely views over the vineyard and mountains. Great value for money. Tasty wine available at the vineyard.

Liked Very friendly staff and beautiful wine shop! Beautiful views of the mountains on a clear day. No facilities other than a toilet but for £9, it’s perfect! Cheaper than an Aire.

Disliked The wind and dust.

Route directions

Satnav devices may direct you along impassable vineyard paths. There are three roads to Mas Alart, but two of them are not suitable for motorhomes: the entrance opposite ‘Chausson Matériaux’ and the entrance via the ‘Chemin de Charlemagne’ (the road connecting Saint Nazaire to Saleilles). You must take the entrance via the RD22 halfway between Saleilles and Cabestany.

Local attractions

Anyone keen on history should visit Perpignan (15 minutes’ drive) to see the vast Palace of the Kings of Majorca with its ornate brickwork, pretty chapel and serene inner courtyards. The fascinating harbour town of Saint-Nazaire (10 minutes) enchants with its majestic townhouses once owned by fishing and engineering magnates or the neighbourhood of Petit Maroc, a riverside quarter crammed with bars and restaurants. Getting away from urban delights, you can explore the marshy landscapes of Brière Regional Natural Park (10 minutes) on traditional flat-bottomed boats, or take day cruises to the tidal island of Noirmoutier to gorge on local harvested oysters and shellfish. Visit hides on the shores of Canet-Saint-Nazaire Lagoon (also 10 minutes) to look for flamingoes and hoopoes, or see how fishermen once worked at the restored Village de Pêcheurs (15 minutes). If you feel like a day at a sandy beach, there are several to choose from; if you don’t want to take the car, there’s a cycle path that starts near Mas Alart and leads down to the Mediterranean coastline. Saint-Cyprien beach (15 minutes) is a popular family option with restaurants nearby, while quieter Sainte-Marie-Plage (20 minutes) is dog-friendly all year around.
