A family vibe, loads to do and a setting close to the coast are the boxes ticked at Camping Le Lamparo in the Pyrénées Orientales… and then there’s the free sauna, the site hairdresser and the proximity to Spain for days across the border… Guests of all ages and ilks will find their days thoroughly filled at this Sainte-Marie La Mer site, from a session at the fitness centre in the morning to hours of evening entertainment in high season. If you’re an active type, follow up your fitness centre time with a swim in the heated outdoor pool or a turn on the tennis courts; if the very thought makes you feel faint, make your gentle way to the free Jacuzzi, steam room and two saunas, to the pétanque court for a placid game, or to the on-site hairdresser to have your tresses tamed. Kids can have their holiday itineraries nicely full also, either under their own steam at the site playground, or via the face painting, clay modelling, games, drawing and other activities of the kids’ club. Gather the clan together afterwards for a lengthy sup and sip in the bar-restaurant’s snack bar, pizzeria and terrace; bread and pastries can be ordered for the next morning too. And off site? Camping Le Lamparo is 10 minutes’ amble from local town Sainte-Marie, five minutes’ drive from the nearest beach, within half an hour’s drive of Perpignan, Collioure and Argelès-sur-Mer, an hour from the Spanish border…

Local attractions

This spectacular slice of southern France between sea and mountains near the Spanish border is in prime position for beach days, watersports, chateâux and cave visits, city jaunts… all with direct access to the Mediterranean from Sainte-Marie an easy kilometre away. After your (several) beach and site days, turn your attention to the towns and cities within easy reach for day trips: Le Lamparo’s mighty convenient setting is between Leucate, Le Barcarès and Torreilles to the north, all between 10 and 20 minutes’ drive away; Canet-en-Roussillon (five minutes), Saint-Cyprien (15 minutes) and Argeles sur Mer (30 minutes) to the south, and the hugely pretty city of Perpignan 20 minutes away. Other recommended options from the site team include the museums in Collioure and Tautavel 35 minutes away; Château de Castelnou, standing on its rocky outcrop since the 10th century (40 minutes) and medieval Carcassonne, on the banks of the Aude river an hour and 15 minutes away. Over the border, Figueres is an hour’s drive away and Barcelona two and a half hours.
