  • Well-equipped safari tents 4km from Villefranche-de-Conflent
  • In the Catalan Pyrenees Regional Natural Park for hikes and bike rides
  • Swimming pool, restaurant and high-season kids' activities
Packing for the Pyrenees? Keep it light by selecting a safari tent stay at Vodatent at Camping Le Rotja, a friendly Dutch-managed site in a scenic rural spot four kilometres from Villefranche-de-Conflent. Much of what you need for everyday life is already set up here: tents are kitted out with beds, lighting and a fab fully-equipped mobile kitchen, meaning you can cook meals indoors on cooler days... or wheel it out on a whim for alfresco cheffing. (Or you could ignore it entirely and stroll over to the restaurant for sociable meals and drinks out on the terrace – excellent news for those with a ‘no-chores-on-hols’ rule.) You can even afford to keep the kids’ kit to a minimum, for there’s plenty to keep them amused on site even if you've not stacked the car with all their clobber. The swimming pool and paddling pool will give them spaces for splashing, and there’s also a fab playground with swings, a sandbox, a trampoline and table tennis. High-season hols have the added feature of organised games and other activities to keep them busy for a bit. Don’t make the packing too minimal though – you’ll likely be wanting comfy shoes and/or bikes to take to the nearby paths, camera kit for Pyreneean pics and a swimming cossie for spa soaking.

Local attractions

There’s some simply stunning scenery around Le Rotja – it is, after all, in the Catalan Pyrenees Regional Natural Park... If you don’t have the mountaineering skills to climb Le Canigou (the 2785-metre peak that looms in the distance), there are plenty of easier options nearby: hike or bike direct from the site or enlist the help of a donkey or a four-wheel drive to assist your passage. Another fab way to see some of your surrounds is to board the famed Yellow Train from Villefranche-de-Conflent for a viewsome ride up to Bolquère (the highest train station in all the land). And how about seeing what lies below ground? That you can do at the Canalettes caves just outside Villefranche-de-Conflent. The town itself is worth a wander too: the pink granite buildings make it a pretty place to poke about in, and the Vauban fortifications of Fort Libéria have earned it UNESCO World Heritage Site status. After you've roamed, take the 15-minute drive to Vernet-les-Bains to wallow in its luscious thermal waters.
