General

  • Peaceful countryside site at the foot of the Massif du Tres Estelles
  • A 10-minute walk from Escaro in the Catalan Pyrenees
  • Pizza and bread making, big natural pool and communal barbecues

It's big rather than small happiness at the mountain site of Le P'tit Bonheur – at least if you crave a peaceful rural location, clear clean air with no light pollution, spectacular views, and a setting kept as natural as possible.

And a slice or three of homemade pizza might be in order too…? Join in at one of the pizza and bread making sessions on site, where samples of both are kneaded with varying levels of professionalism by guests' own fair hands. The dough of both is then baked in the woodfired oven, to have for supper (pizza) and breakfast (bread, and you couldn't possibly comment if that ofttime includes pizza too).

Le P'tit Bonheur is a friendly countryside and forest site of six hectares at the foot of the Massif du Tres Estelles, in the Catalan Pyrenees Regional Nature Park a 10-minute walk from the Pyrénées-Orientales town of Escaro. Horse riding, canoeing, canyoning, hiking and climbing are all in the region – as are thermal spas if the thought of too much activity makes you fret after too much pizza.

The centrepiece of the site is the clear and green natural pool, 20 by 11 metres to a depth of 1.90 metres at one end and a shallow part at the other for safe splashing. After a few hours of that, there's table tennis and table football to test your skills at, before testing skills of a different sort at the shared barbecue area – or you could just go and knead another pizza…

Please note

The outdoor swimming pool is open between 15/06 and 15/09 (subject to weather conditions).

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Very pretty setting in the mountains.

    Disliked:

I am a very positive person and usually do not complain but it was difficult to find a positive for this site. It was an horrendous route which was not suited to towing a caravan. The entrance too and from the site is very difficult to negotiate and due to pot holes in the road the back of the caravan caught on exit. If the site had a few people staying and the facilities were up to date it would have off-set the stress of the journey but it just was not worth it. The village is deserted and the campsite is too. It is very run down and feels uncared for. We would never contemplate the pool as it had green slime on the bottom. Very sad as it was clearly once a nice place but now it has no sole and is very unloved. The caravan in the next pitch had been left to rot away and the facilities were heading the same way. For the current standard of the site it is very expensive. The site owner was friendly and helpful but that was the only good point. We paid for 2 nights in advance and only stayed for 1. In 25 years of caravanning we have never done that before. We love a remote site but this felt vulnerable and abandoned. Sorry to say it but dont book this site as you will be disappointed. The photos on the website must have been taken years ago!

From the manager...

The elderly couple have probably thought camping was plain and not at 900 meters altitude and mountain roads have scared them. They arrived late and only stayed one night and allow themselves to say that the site is run down and the pool with green slime on the bottom? The campground is rustic as shown on the first page of the website of camping and surrounded by nature. The caravans are old but functional and the water of the swimming pool is very clear as you will see from the video of the summer 2016 that will be on the website of the campsite. I advise them not to exceed 300 meters above sea level in the future and go in campgrounds classified 4 stars by paying the full price.

Local attractions

The site's setting in the Catalan Pyrenees Regional Nature Park means there's wildlife and scenic hiking all around, as well as more adventurous options like canyoning, climbing and kayaking. Four nature reserves are within a 20-kilometre radius of Escaro.

Leave right from the site to trek among the mountains and forest, or find a spot nearby to settle down for a few hours as night falls: Le P'tit Bonheur is in a remote and peaceful place with clear skies for stargazing and no noise pollution so you can listen out for local wildlife.

If you seek a yet more serene time, drive for 25 minutes or so to the spa town of Vernet-les-Bains. Several walks lead from town, including – if you seek not a serene but an energetic time – a starting point for the clamber up to the summit of Canigou.

Le P'tit Bonheur's amiable and knowledgeable owners also reckon guests should get along to the Tuesday morning market at Prades, about 21 kilometres away, and the abbeys of Saint-Michel de Cuxa and Saint-Martin du Canigou, both within 35 minutes' drive.
