General

  • Family-run site in the Catalan Pyrenees Regional Nature Park
  • Close to 7 ski resorts including Font-Romeu; lots of outdoorsy options
  • Outdoor pool with wave machines, waterslides and Jacuzzi next door

No less than seven winter sports resorts – including the famed Font-Romeu – lie around the jaw-droppingly spectacular locale of this highly pleasant mountain spot. Set a few minutes' walk from the superly well-appointed little village of Err, high up in the Catalan Pyrenees Regional Nature Park, family-run Las Closas is set up for comfy family stays and smashing vistas of the surrounding (and spectacular) peaks among a lush and leafy two-hectare park.

This muy tranquilo place lies 1,350 metres above sea level, in a pristine and highly serene land bordering France and Spain. Adjacent to the park is the settlement’s very own leisure pool, well set up for fun family days with a pools, a wave machine, waterslides, and a Jacuzzi.

During summer, all sorts of outdoorsy pursuits are available, from hiking, horse riding and mountain biking to decidedly more adrenalised activities such as canyoning, climbing and paragliding. Helpful for when you want to soak up a little of the local culture, when area is also known for its abundance of events and festivals, with themes ranging from classical music to shepherding competitions, and several historic spots are around to visit too, such as the fortified citadels Mont Louis and the UNESCO-listed Villefranche de Conflent.

As winter draws in, the area becomes a winter sports peeps’ paradise, with heaps of downhill-skiing and snowboarding trails around the seven stations of Les Neiges Catalanes, and the all-ability cross-country skiing and traditional pistes around Espace Nordique du Capcir’s 190 kilometres of marked trails. If you quite like the idea of a less speedy/energised snow sport, then snowshoeing and dog sledding are topping options too.

Gastronomy fans will find plenty to pique their foodie interest around Las Closas’ locale too, for several eateries are within easy reach around the vicinity; if, however, a self-catered stay is more your kind of vibe, pick up locally produced picnic supplies like charcuterie meats, cheeses, honey and fruit and veg at the local grocery shop, or procure fresh meat and poultry from the nearby village butcher for alfresco barbecue sizzles.

Accommodation here is well laid-out among grassy areas and partially shaded by mature trees. Guests all have access to simple and well-maintained amenities including hot water, showers and a baby bathroom, along with a washing-up area and a launderette.

Other tiptop facilities include free wifi, a games room and a ping pong table. There's also a grassy play area for tiddles to expend excess energy while on site; if you're hanging around your mountain haven for the day, be sure to take the kids along here or to Err’s public pool to splash and slide around while you settle back in the Jacuzzi and drink up more of those cracking mountain views.

Local attractions

The local valleys, lakes and peaks – some of which reach a lofty 3,000 meters above sea level – are a paradise for outdoorsy sorts of all persuasions: days upon days could well be spent out exploring along hiking and mountain biking trails that lie around the immediate vicinity, and if you’re a fan of hoofing it around, you can also tour from atop a horse. Also splendidly, the landscape lends itself well to other activities, like scrambling up via ferrata climbing routes, canyoning and fishing in lakes and crackingly crystalline waterways, golfing and – for brave adrenaline junkies – paragliding high up in the sky; just ask the super friendly Las Closas team to point you toward their fave local spots.

For rather more sedate days, the Eyne Valley is especially good for wildlife watchers, or after days spent out and about during summer or winter, melt all your muscle aches away in the soothing waters of the sulphurous baths at Llo, within five kilometres, or at Dorres and Saint Thomas, both within 35 minutes’ drive.

Another highlight of the locale has got to be the Little Yellow Train of the Pyrenees (or ‘Le Petit Train Jaune’ if you’re au fait with the lingo), which runs from Villefranche de Conflent to Latour de Carol near the Spanish town of Puigcerda, travelling through the Cerdagne and the Upper Conflent for smashing views over the Tet valley, with particular highlights being the spectacular and highly impressive bridges of Gisclard and Cassagne – the latter being rather special, as it’s the only railway suspension bridge in all of France.
