As seaside resorts go, Argelès sur Mer pretty much has it all – a splendid seven kilometres of sandy beach, a coastal forest, a harbour full of fab restaurants, and a pretty village with ancient streets and buildings to wander around. Throw in watersports, rock pools, a canyoning park, a waterpark, animal attractions, theme parks and it’s possible that you’ll have everything needed for a tiptop family break all in one place. And should you require more (or wisely decide to move in for a lengthy stay), you’re within a half-hour drive of arty Collioure, medieval Perpignan and hikes in the foothills of the Pyrenees. In the midst of all this activity is Camping Le Lagon d'Argelès, a family-friendly site in a peaceful tree-filled spot between the village and the beach and within easy walking distance of both (it’ll take you around 15 minutes to stroll to the beach or up to the village for restaurants, shops and the like; a little shuttle train runs to the beach too if you're feeling weary). At times when you’re not roaming around either beach or village there’s plenty to keep all ages amused on site, including an outdoor fitness area and playground. For dips on fine days, take your pick from the open-air swimming pool and the shallow artificial lagoon, which has a sandy beach and deckchairs to chill out on.

Local attractions

Let’s start with that beach – a seven-kilometre wide sandy stretch with plenty of space for sunbathing, beach games, paddling and all kinds of watersports (kayaking, paddleboarding, windsurfing and scuba diving are among the top picks around here). Boat trips can be taken from the harbour, and there are fab walks to be had along the coastal path as it meanders past cliffs and through the forest. For adrenaline seekers, Argelès sur Mer also has its own canyoning park and a Drop-In waterpark with jumps and slides. More leisurely days can be spent meeting the animals at Saint-André discovery farm or La Vallée des Tortues, or watching the birds of prey at Les Aigles de Valmy. Also popular with visiting kids is Fantassia theme park, 15 minutes’ drive away and home to dragons, fairies, unicorns and all sorts of other magical beings.
