  • Scenic family site on the banks of the Gorges du Tarn canyon and river
  • On Sainte-Enimie’s outskirts, a 30-minute walk to the centre
  • Private beaches, pool, canoe rental, playground, grocery shop and bar
Something along the lines of ‘mon Dieu’ might be the first phrase you utter when you turn up at Camping Couderc. And why? Because this site in the UNESCO-listed Gorges du Tarn has a seriously splendid setting, as well as ample amenities like a heated swimming pool (summer season only) overlooking a bluey-green river lined in private beaches... This Languedoc-Roussillon park also has a playground – for packing the kids off to while you man the barbecue – and a grocery shop stocking the essentials. A bar’s also here for sups once you send the small fry out of your hair, and takeaway food (including paninis and rotisserie chicken) are sold by staff in the warmer months should you want to avoid any and all sorts of cooking. Activities are as plentiful as amenities: kayaks and canoes are available to rent and the region’s also ripe for exploring on foot or bike, with canyoning, climbing, caving and horseback riding all possible too. And those preferring to stay at the park to laze beside the banks of the Tarn can do so while attempting to catch a fine specimen, as fishing’s allowed at the river. If you do manage to make a trip into the countryside swing by some of the historic villages and towns dotted around, such as Gorges-du-Tarn-Causses 30 minutes’ walk away. Sainte-Enimie is half an hour away on foot too and is considered one of the prettiest settlements in France for its cobbled streets, Romanesque Church of Our Lady of the Assumption and arched bridge.

Local attractions

Being in the Gorges du Tarn means the site is also in the Cévennes National Park for hiking and biking in this lush green landscape. With 300 circular day treks to decide between (as well as four long-distance trails, 30 themed paths and a mass of mountain bike routes), you can spend days, weeks or even months wearing your walking boots out. Rare creatures can be seen while on wanders in this wildlife-rich area, including swooping vultures, wandering wolves and bumbling bison. Especially keen to sight these critters? Guarantee it by tootling off to the Margeride reserve about an hour and 20 minutes away for bison and the Les Loups du Gévaudan (50 minutes) to witness wolves. If you’re more into culture, the region’s littered in châteaux too with the famed hilltop structure at Sévérac also being 50 minutes away.
