  • Spacious pitches on the banks of the Allier river in Chapeauroux
  • Renowned trout fishing location; Lac de Naussac half an hour drive
  • Bar, snack bar, wood oven and barbecue on site
If you’re after a base for some exciting outdoor activities in the Lozère countryside, take a look at Camping Les Eaux Vives, on the banks of the Allier river in Chapeauroux. This small site is located in a protected area between Margeride and Pays du Velay, at an altitude of 750 metres. It sits in the middle of a huge basalt cirque, with lots of options nearby for hikes through the woods, along the old Cévenol railway line or on parts of the GR470 or the Stevenson Path. Plenty of other outdoor activities are nearby too: Chapeauroux is renowned for its trout fishing, while other river spots in the area have more active pursuits like wild swims, kayaking and whitewater rafting. In between all such outings, you’ll be staying at spacious and flat grass pitches with a bit of shade, plus access to a motorhome drain terminal, a washing machine and modern bathroom facilities (including individual cubicles and access for less mobile guests). Dogs are welcome as long as they’re vaccinated and kept on a leash. When it comes to downtime, the site also has a TV lounge, table tennis and table football. For food and drinks, there’s a bar and a snack bar on site, along with a terrace that’s got a barbecue and wood oven where you can cook your own meals. There’s a small grocery store in the village for supplies.

2 bedroom rental tent

Liked: We turned up soaked on our bikes in the rain and received a very warm welcome. Nice campsite, clean and modern bathrooms with hot water, nice snack bar with reasonable prices, we could order freshly baked pastries and bread for the next morning. Beautiful location under the chapeauroux viaduct and next to the river would definitely stay again. Oh and safe place to leave the bikes out of the rain overnight! Would recommend.

Local attractions

In the mountainous landscape of the Margeride region, the Reserve Bisons Margeride Europe (half an hour’s drive) is home to – you guessed it – a herd of European bison. You’ll be able to see these furry prehistoric beasts and admire the views from the comfort of a horse-drawn carriage. A half-hour drive also takes you to Lac de Naussac. Whatever your favourite recreational activity, chances are you’ll be able to practise it here, from hiking, biking and horse riding (trails run all around this expansive lake) to watersports like sailing, canoeing and windsurfing. A fishing centre rents boats, so you can also row to a quiet spot on the lake to catch carp or zander. If you’re after more thrilling water-based activities, head to the Gorges de l’Allier (50 minutes) where you can go whitewater rafting or canyoning among a dramatic landscape of forested ravines. There is also a tourist train taking you to hidden beaches and trailheads.
