Hike and bike as much as you like – pick a pitch at Camping Huttopia Gorges du Tarn and you’ll be in a prime spot for hitting the trails of the Cévennes National Park. And with around 300 suggested circular day hikes to pick from (along with four long-distance trails, 30 themed trails and a heap of mountain bike routes) there’s plenty to keep you going for days, weeks or indeed most of a year (boss might say ‘non’ to that one though…) And that’s before you’ve even contemplated the other antics on offer around these parts: horse riding, donkey trekking, canyoning or climbing in the mountains, or canoeing or paddleboarding down the Tarn river and through the stunning Gorges du Tarn. Phew – time to relax after all that activity? There’s plenty of space to do just that on site, perhaps with a gentle game of pétanque, an alfresco snack at the café or a swim in the pool. If you prefer to plunge into natural water, the Tarn river flows alongside the site, with great spots for swims and fishing.

Local attractions

It’s all about the open air around here – the Cévennes National Park is packed with outdoorsy activities. Bring your hiking boots or mountain bike to hit the trails or have a chat with local activity centres for days of canyoning, climbing or horse riding, all of which can be had within a half-hour drive. A few minutes down the road in Les Vignes is a watersports centre where you can sign up for canoeing, rafting and paddleboarding trips locally or in the Gorges du Tarn, a few kilometres away. Fret not if this all sounds a little exhausting, for gentler days are on hand too – perhaps wandering around the châteaux of Peyrelade or Sévérac or poking around in the pretty villages of Hauterives and La Malène, all of which are within a half-hour drive. The Maison des Vautours bird park and Gévaudan wolf park are both worth a visit, too.
