  • Peaceful, relaxed riverside campsite in the spectacular Gorges du Tarn
  • La Malène and Cévennes National Park both 15 minutes’ drive
  • River beach and bar, canoe and paddleboard rental, pétanque court
Tucked into the Gorges du Tarn on the banks of its namesake river, Camping Le Gabitou in Lozère is a wonderfully laid-back sort of site with just a few pitches overlooking the river and shaded under trees. Set 15 minutes’ drive from the gorgeous village of La Malène, which squats below towering cliffs, this spot may be peaceful and relaxed, but there’s no shortage of stuff to do. Anglers can fish for trout in the river and grill them on the camp’s barbecue for supper, while kids can swim in the Tarn or families get together to play rousing games of pétanque. Hire canoes and paddleboards from helpful campsite owner Muriel to splash up and down the river, rent bikes in La Malène to explore the region, or forego all that and simply hang out in the alfresco riverside bar on site. On the edge of Cévennes National Park – UNESCO-listed for its spectacular rugged landscapes – the campsite is also in the largest International Dark Sky Reserve in Europe. On clear nights, don’t miss the chance to lie back on the river bank and watch the celestial show taking place up above. Le Gabitou is also something of a wildlife haven, so if you stay quiet as you go about your day, you might chance upon beavers in the water and vultures flying high above you in the gorge.

Local attractions

A whole bunch of activities are available in the Cévennes National Park (15 minutes’ drive), from horse riding to mountain biking and climbing. Try canyoning and scrambling up the via ferrata course at La Maison du Plein Air des Gorges du Tarn (10 minutes), or go climbing on the limestone escarpments of the Parc Naturel des Grands Causses (half an hour). You can also pick up canoes on site and paddle down the River Tarn to the soaring river bridge at Saint-Chély-du-Tarn (10 minutes by road); take provisions with you for a picnic on the river beach overlooking the bridge. Have a potter around the attractive stone-built hamlet with its backdrop of sheer cliffs, and then head up to Le Saltadou observation point (20 minutes) for spectacular views over the Gorges du Tarn. La Malène (15 minutes) is another pretty Lozère village; have a wander through its cobbled streets to the 12th-century Romanesque church and the troglodyte caves at the foot of the gorge walls. For all you keen walkers, it’s also on the GR736 Gorges et Vallée du Tarn long-distance hiking route.
