- Hérault site with stunning Haut-Languedoc Regional Natural Park views
- Riols 10 minutes’ drive and medieval Olargues half an hour
- Bamboo-framed domes with private decking, kitchen and bathroom
Surrounded by forests, pastures, waterfalls and centuries-old villages, the geodesic domes at Les Coumayres, 10 minutes’ drive from Riols in Hérault, have some pretty special views over valleys and forests to the snow-capped Pyrenees in the Haut-Languedoc Regional Natural Park. Each cosy dome sleeps four in comfort – bedding is provided – and they’re laid out with plenty of storage and two comfy sofas, plus a private wooden decking where you can relax and enjoy the incredible views.
The terraces each have a barbecue, table and chairs for four people as well as a couple of deck chairs where you can relax on sunny afternoons. Just a few steps away are the exclusive-use bathrooms (with shower) and kitchens (with all the basics).
The owners live in the main house a couple of minutes’ walk away, so are on hand if you have any issues or are in need of sightseeing inspo. You can also join them for summer film nights under the stars – and talking of stars, when conditions are right, you can often catch sight of the shimmering Milky Way in the night sky.
On site there’s also a playground with a trampoline and wooden climbing frame. Close by is a treehouse with a viewing platform, from where adults can keep an eye on their offspring or relax with a favourite book.

Local attractions
If you’re looking for waterside hikes, Lac de Vézoles (15 minutes’ drive) is the place – it's a peaceful spot with waymarked routes through pine forest circumnavigating the lake. If you’re looking for something a bit more testing, don your hiking boots and head for the Sentier des 1000 Marches hiking area (20 minutes) for scrambles over rock and through gorges to the jagged limestone peaks of the Massif du Caroux.
You can get more outdoor fixes by cycling trails in the Haut-Languedoc Regional Natural Park, where wild sheep, boar, otters and golden eagles are often spotted. The local town of Riols (10 minutes) is also passed by the Passa Païs cycling and walking route, following a former railway line between Mazamet (50 minutes) and Bédarieux (an hour).
You may like to venture deep underground at the Grotte de la Fileuse de Verre (25 minutes), where stalactites and stalagmites drape themselves over limestone rocks. Also close by is medieval Olargues (half an hour), a member of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France for its soft-stone houses tumbling down to the River Jaur from the clifftop castle and labyrinth of steep cobbled streets dotted with bistros and shops selling artisan produce.
