  • Eight-hectare site in a wine-growing area, near the beach and sea
  • Five minutes' drive from the ancient fishing town of Mèze
  • Oyster platters, mussels and local wine all available on the terrace
This, reckon the owners, is the 'real south of France': think glistening Mediterranean sands and deep blue waters, sailing off thr coast, digging into plates of oysters and mussels washed down with the finest of local wines... or just taking it easy on a fully relaxed hol to suit all sorts. Make like the Mézois and have all this to your holiday heart’s content by settling down among vineyards and close to the coast at the Hérault's Domaine Saint Paul le Marseillais. It’s just inland from the ancient fishing town and boating harbour of Mèze (where Mézois live, but you knew that), among warm and sunny climes, shellfish and oyster centres, and the lively buzz of Mèze and the other Med towns along the coast. And of course, there is wine. This region has been on maps as a local winery since the early 19th century, and before that was (and still is today) a peaceful resting place for travellers along the Via Domitia. It’s surrounded by vineyards: yes, you can see their viewsome vistas from the Domaine Saint Paul le Marseillais site, and yes, several samples from them land up on site for guests to make their way through. Wine sampling should be carried out on the handsome terrace under the mulberry trees for optimum effect... the terrace is beside the pool if you need to keep an eye on splashing tiddlers, and is also the top site spot for working your way through the food menu including the site’s famed bruschettas or (you really must) a platter of fresh oysters.

Local attractions

Domaine Saint Paul le Marseillais is six kilometres inland from the splendid old fishing town and modern boating harbour of Mèze, a port of great import since the times of the great Phoenicians. Its Étang de Thau setting was also on the Roman empire’s Via Domitia route from Italy to Spain, so soon gained a reputation for restful stays and excellent cuisine: the shellfish and oysters of the town and the Basin de Thau are famed worldwide. Now that you’ve imparted all those factoids to les enfants and gently insisted they try oysters for the first time (because why not, if not here), there are boats to watch around the marina, a sandy beach to run around on, and loads of events day and night all the year long. A traditional market runs every Thursday morning in all seasons, a flea market on Saturdays and a night market every Thursday in summer; for annual events there’s a World Culture Week in June, an oyster festival in August and plenty more where those came from in most months. Another must-visit French Mediterranean town, Sète, is a short drive away on the other side of the lagoon.
