  • Dog-friendly site 300 metres from the Hérault river
  • Canoe hire on the river; a 10-minute drive to Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert
  • Playground, kids' entertainment and a snack bar on site
Canoeing the river Hérault, exploring caves, swimming in gorges and tasting wine on historic vineyards … the list goes on. All these activities - and more - are easy to seek out from Family Camping les Rives de L’Hérault in Gignac, just half an hour’s drive from Montpellier (France's third-largest city and an excellent spot for strolling historic boulevards or taking a catamaran out to sea). The folk here want you to experience their relaxed state of mind and the family atmosphere – once through the gates, they say you’re part of the family. With such a fine location, 300 metres from the Hérault river, relaxing should be easy: there’s swimming in the river in the summer and canoe hire for paddles passing the river's green banks. This is holiday time, and the dog-friendly site knows that. That’s why the place has been tactfully kitted out with a kids’ playground and a snack bar. There’s kids’ entertainment run by the site too, just the thing to cater to any younger guests with short attention spans. The site’s Hérault location has a lot of potential for exciting days out too, of course. Kick things off with a visit to Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert (10 minutes’ drive). It’s next to Gorges de l'Hérault (10 minutes) for hikes in the hills and swims in the freshwater gorge. The village is medieval, backed by green cliffs and consisting of old houses spread out around a central abbey.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: The campsite had marked, spacious pitches with good access to electric hookup. There was entertainment at night at the bar which sounded quite lively although we didn’t go.

Disliked: The 4 water taps near our pitch did not work. The shower and toilet blocks were quite dingy and not particularly clean. There were not toilet seats on the toilets and no toilet roll and hand soap. For the price I would have expected better facilities. On arrival the information about the campsite was minimal.

Local attractions

Loving the sound of the landscapes around Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert (10 minutes’ drive)? Then, you’ll probably be a fan of the water at Lac du Salagou (40 minutes) – this huge, seven-kilometre lake is a watersports destination and hikes are rather splendid around the shore. If you also like to spend your holidays sipping on fine wine and strolling between the vines, there are several wineries around with many different grape varieties. This includes Château Capion (10 minutes), an organic wine estate with an open space and sampling tours around the vineyard and wine cellar. What else? Clamouse cave (10 minutes), perhaps? There’s a zipwire course there, as well as rare crystals of the eccentric and aragonite kind, and climbing activities combined with canoeing and water hiking if you book ahead. To the south is Cirque de Navacelles (50 minutes), a natural amphitheatre formed by erosion. Lace up your shoes, as the hikes take between an hour and three hours… or simply take a short visit to the small museum and Iron Age hut.
