  • Peaceful site in a Hérault vineyard 10 minutes’ drive from Gignac
  • Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert 20 minutes’ drive and Pézenas half an hour
  • Spacious and private pitches in a pine forest; wine tasting available
You must admit that camping in the middle of any winery sounds pretty good. And at Domaine de Pélican, 10 minutes’ drive from medieval Gignac in the Languedoc wine region, you also get the chance to tour the vineyard and join tasting sessions on Monday nights during the July and August high season. That’s on top of getting to camp on spacious pitches in a two-hectare forest of stately pines. At Pélican, the aim is for guests to relax amid nature; to that end pitch numbers have been strictly limited, and there’s bags of space between each one to ensure complete privacy. Here, the sound of birdsong replaces the noise of traffic, and the scent of pine accompanies leisurely days doing whatever takes your fancy: hanging out with family or friends, dozing in the sun with a good book, tasting new wines… The site’s location in Hérault makes it a handy starting point for exploring wild landscapes, pretty villages and the gastronomic/vinological activities of the region – and after a day of discovery, you know you can return to the peace of the forest and enjoy evenings under the stars. Practical facilities to make life go with a flow include hot showers and loos, a washing-up area and ice-pack freezing. Electric hook-ups and electric car charging are both also available for a small charge.

Local attractions

Where to start your Hérault adventures? Plump for stunning Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert (20 minutes’ drive), with its splendid UNESCO-listed abbey clinging precariously to the Hérault Gorges. Once you’re done admiring the architecture, pottering around the streets and marvelling at the craggy mountain backdrop, you can hire kayaks to navigate your way down the river. Another gorgeous and historic town is Pézenas (half an hour), packed with narrow alleys, hidden courtyards and 16th-century mansions. Try to time your visit for a Friday evening, when all the bijou shops stay open late and bars selling local wines spread out onto the cobbles, or hit the aromatic Saturday produce market as it takes over the ancient town centre. If you’d like to learn more about the region’s Languedoc wines, make a beeline for the Terrasses du Larzac vineyards (25 minutes), where you can tour wine cellars, enjoy guided tasting sessions and – of course – snap up your favourite bottles to take back home. The area is also known for the quality of its olive oil, and you can visit traditional mills like Moulin du Mas Palat (10 minutes) to sample newly pressed oils.
