  • Beachfront site 10 minutes' drive from Frontignan
  • 15 minutes from Sète and half an hour from elegant Montpellier
  • Lots of activities including cooking, aqua gym and dance classes
Water, water everywhere – Sandaya Camping Les Tamaris is in the rather fab position of being flanked by the stuff on both sides. On one side of this skinny little sliver of land 10 minutes’ drive from Frontignan is a natural lake where you can view flamingoes frolicking; on the other a lengthy sweep of fine sandy beach and the Mediterranean Sea. As beachfront sites go, this one’s a bit of a winner: direct access to the sands means you can get from sleep to sunbathing spot in a matter of minutes, and the serviced private beach area is a most excellent spot for those who like their lounging to have a luxury vibe. If that couple of minutes’ stroll is too much to contemplate, you don’t even have to go that far for a dip, as there’s a smashing and sizeable waterpark on site, with a paddling pool and water play areas for les enfants and aqua gym classes for those who feel the need for a bit of aquatic activity. Sticking to dry land there are further ways to get active: gym classes, dance sessions, an outdoor fitness area, beach volleyball tournaments, rowing a traditional boat… but lest you start to think you’ve stumbled into some form of heath camp, there are also ways to undo all your efforts with a cooking session or a cocktail-making class, and plenty of eats and drinks to be had at the food truck and restaurant.

Local attractions

Perhaps unsurprisingly, you’re in a good spot for watersports here, with kitesurfing, windsurfing, paddleboarding, sailing and scuba diving among the options out at sea or on the lake. It’s also worth taking a walk around the saltwater lakes to see what kind of birds are in residence – at certain times of year you may spot flamingoes. For a more cultural day out, head over to Sète, 15 minutes’ drive from the site, to peruse the art galleries – Espace Georges Brassens is highly recommended, as is the Paul Valéry Museum, which also has some fab views from its hillside gardens. While you’re here, see if you can catch a show or concert at the open-air Théâtre de la Mer Jean Vilar. Half an hour’s drive away, the elegant city of Montpellier makes another excellent place for a day out. There are some fab restaurants and museums here, and the car-free historic centre is great for wandering around in, or touring by tram (they were designed by Christian Lacroix, darling – ooh la la).
