General

  • Family-run site on a vineyard in the south of the Cévennes
  • An hour's drive from Montpellier and the Mediterranean coast
  • Wine tasting, purchases and tours available on site

If you’re partial to a tipple or two on hols, this is a place you’ll most likely want to raise a glass to. Depending on your preference, that could be a glass of red, white, rosé or sparkling – all are produced on site at Domaine d’Anglas, from the very vines that surround you as you rest your head for the night. This being a family-friendly place, there’s also a tasty organic raisin juice on offer for smaller guests to join in the toasts.

Five minutes’ drive from the little village of Saint-Bauzille-de-Putois, Camping de Domaine d’Anglas is a gorgeous rural retreat in the south of the Cévennes, with the Hérault river flowing just past its boundaries (its clear waters are just the thing for a cooling dip on a warm day if you don’t fancy the hour-long drive to the coast, and it’s also got some fab fishing spots).

These scenic surrounds really lend themselves rather well to a whole heap of outdoorsy activities – hiking, horse riding, canoeing and paragliding are top picks for getting out and about nearby, and there’s a cycle hire facility on site to aid you in your quest to explore on two wheels. Add in medieval villages, ancient caves and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the form of the Cirque de Navacelles and you’ve got plenty to fill your days at times when you’re not quaffing the good stuff.

That good stuff is rather splendid, however (and pleasingly low in wine miles if you need such excuses). Current owners Carole and Roger are the fourth generation to run this estate, which has been in the same family since the late 19th century, and it’s fair to say that they’re both enthusiastic and highly knowledgable on their specialist subject. They and their winemakers will happily take you on tours around the place, answer your questions and provide you with cheese and wines to sample as you truffle out your fave.

Lest you should become wobbly with all this wine almost on tap, there’s also a restaurant on site for plentiful eats including pizzas, salads, burgers and cheese or meat platters (along with breakfasts for a morning-after boost should you require one). Folks who prefer to be more self-reliant on the food front can cook over coals at the shared barbecue area, having picked up all the necessaries either at the site’s shop or at the butcher, baker and grocer down in the village.

Should you be travelling with les enfants in tow, you’ll be chuffed to note that this isn’t just a fun place for the grownups – there’s plenty for them to get up to around the site, including a football pitch, volleyball court, table tennis and a playground as well as splashing about in the river. In summer site staff organise special activities for kids to keep them amused for a bit while you relax, perchance with a yoga class or a massage. Or with a glass of wine in hand of course (you are on hols, after all – cheers to that).

Please note

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Lovely Site, Good Variation of Accommodation, Staff Friendly 12/09/2017

The site was lovely and the facilities clean. Small restaurant on site provided lovely food and we really enjoyed our stay. Our accommodation was good if a little compact. We would go again without question but wold not stay in the same accommodation.

    Disliked:

We had a lovely stay but did find our accommodation a little small, very hot (no fans and could not have windows open due to mosquitos) and very squeaky. I think perhaps our disappointment was partially self inflicted. The Caravans are exactly that! We had (probably wrongly) anticipated something a bit bigger more of a static caravan size, with a bit more room to move about or sit during the day. Possibly if there had been some form of covered/ sheltered outside space on the plot it would have made it a little more comfortable. We don't want this to be taken as a negative just remember if you book Caravan (you get a caravan). I also found the inspection at the end a little intimidating, especially as I has washed thing we didn't use (because there were a little dirty on arrival). We only used 2 cups but 2 of the cups we didn't use where found to be dirty on the inspection so could not have been clean on arrival. The lady was very nice and did not question me at all but like I say I felt a little uncomfortable. (might I suggest an arrival inspection as well as departure?)

Size of pitch, good walking landscape and nice river to bathe in, lovely restaurant. Great welcome and nice to see they were concerned about Brexit. We weren't.

    Disliked:

One neighbour decided to have a problem with the 'English' in the big van - we said we were Welsh.
    He didn't know the difference.

Nothing wrong with the site though.

Directions

From Montpellier, take the D986 north. At Saint-Bauzille-de-Putois, turn left onto the D108. You will find the site on the left-hand side.

Local attractions

Venture out into the locale and you’ll encounter many ways to work up an appetite for the food and drink treats that await you back at base. Walkers can start with the six-kilometre route that runs through the estate’s own vineyard, then head out into the Cévennes National Park for longer and more involved routes taking in mountains, lakes and some super views. Hire bikes on site to roam around the local cycle routes, including one along a disused railway line, or head up to Cazilhac (10 minutes’ drive away) for horse riding excursions.

Down in Saint-Bauzille-de-Putois there’s a canoe centre where you can hire kit or join guided trips on the Hérault river (have a chat with reception staff at Domaine d’Anglas to find out about any current discounts for guests). This is a great area for climbing, too – you can either go freestyle or follow a guide along a via ferrata route. Or you could really up the adrenaline levels and chuck yourself off a mountainside from the paragliding centre 20 minutes’ drive away.

Back down on earth, carry on below the surface to admire the rock formations at the Demoiselles caves, just outside Saint-Bauzille-de-Putois, or trot over to the cave at Clamouse, just over half an hour away. Cirque de Navacelles, a UNESCO World Heritage Site 40 kilometres away, is also worth a visit for those who like to seek out natural wonders. And a little further away at an hour’s drive is the equally gorgeous Mediterranean coast – head to Montpellier for museums, gardens and a vast array of fab restaurants, or venture a little further for sweeping sandy beaches and coastal rambling.
