You'll want to spend sandy times on the beach, of course. And perhaps have a potter around the excellent old cities of Nîmes and Montpellier. And how about a waterpark within a minute or two of your berth, with slides to whizz down on a hot summer's day? Make your Hérault domain at family-friendly Domaine de Gajan for all the above, on a lushly green site a few kilometres from the medieval village of Sommières. De Gajan is just over half an hour's drive from the beaches of Grande Motte, Palavas les Flots and Grau du Roi, and an easy 40 minutes from both Nîmes and Montpellier. It's close to canoeing and hiking in and around the gorges of the Hérault and 10 minutes from the heady adventures of La Roque via ferrata if you're feeling headily active; if your small sorts are too small for anything of the sort, the games, rides and huge maze of Teraventure leisure park are 15 minutes away. Small and slightly less small sorts will be particularly chuffed with what's on offer on site too: there's a summer kids' club for ages six to 12, the likes of archery and sports tournaments for teens (and grownups), and a paddling pool adjoined to the fab outdoor pool for teeny splashers. Entertainment for all ages runs in evenings in high season: think cabaret and music nights, mussel evenings, fancy dress, karaoke, and – for the brave – hypnosis nights. Domaine de Gajan has a restaurant open from May to September dishing up meals, snacks and takeaways as well as running a bakery service. The closest town is Boisseron just over a kilometre away; a market is at Sommières every Saturday.

Liked This was a lovely little campsite. Despite the initial reservation about the pitch, slightly awkward shape with trees it turned out to be great and provide some much needed shade on the day.

The swimming pool was lovely, great temperature 30deg each day. We never had issues getting a sunbed/chair. There are a couple of slides which the children loved and a little splash pool for younger children. The pool was open from 9-8 each day.

The campsite provided a range of evening entertainment from bingo to cabaret acts. On a Friday night there is a pool party with inflatables and music, this was a lot of fun.

The onsite restaurant served a variety of meals and the couple of occasions we ate there it was excellent. Prices were also very reasonable, which considering to eat out elsewhere was a short drive away this was a real suprise.
Pastries and baguettes were able to order the night before the following morning.

Washing machine facilities were also available and very reasonably priced. €5 for washing and €4 for tumble dryer.

The small village of Boisseron was a short 10-15 min walk
The town of Sommiéres was 2.5km easily walkable but of driving plenty of free parking.

This was also a great location for exploring the Herault/Gard region. With some absolute gems just an hours drive including Grotte De Clamouse, Pont De Diable - swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding.
Plenting of cycling options on the local area too.

Disliked The shower block despite being cleaned daily were often very dirty, especially the floors.
The tiles often quite grimy also.

Be advised English speaking is limited so some basic grasp is useful but did not impact us in anyway.

Some of the pitches are a bit awkward in shape so be mindful of taking a large tent or caravan.

Liked La piscina de chorros para los niños es lo único q salvo el día de estancia q estuvimos alli

Disliked El terreno y la parcela con forma irregular. La comunicación con el personal también muy difícil y el espectáculo que nos tocó era todo en francés, por lo que no nos enteramos de nada. No volveremos seguro

Liked Cerca de montpelier. Atención de los empleados, me dieron una solución ya que la electricidad en la parcela que estuvimos no podíamos poner el aire por sobrecarga de la red de esa zona del camping.

Liked Camperplaats, voorzieningen, vriendelijk bedienend personeel, prima restaurant, leuk live-muziek optreden.

Disliked In de avond gezellig wat eten en drinken met leuke muziek.
Plots een racistische grimmige sfeer/houding van hele grote groep blijkbaar vaste Franse campinggasten (jongeren, bevriend/familie van manager leek het net) en de wijze waarop vervolgens de campingmanager en beveiligers daarmee omgingen was verschrikkelijk.
Niet de groep racistische jongeren die onze twee kinderen van 14 jaar tot in de nacht achterna hebben gezeten met zelfs 2 volwassenen met honden daarbij werden daarop door de manager op de vingers getikt, nee de oplossing was dat onze 2 kinderen (waarvan 1 donker getint) in de camper moesten blijven.
Beveiliging beloofde wel dat ze bij onze camper zouden posten om de nacht voor ons veilig te houden...dus niet, dus die nacht geen oog dicht gedaan (zelf maar de wacht gehouden).
Ook geen enkele excuses ontvangen n.a.v. deze gebeurtenis en valse beschuldigingen. Wij komen hier dus helaas NOOIT meer terug, zijn direct de volgende ochtend vroeg vertrokken.

Local attractions

Ready? There's a stonking amount of stuff to see and do around here, from family theme park and beach days to adult activities dangling off cliffs or drifting along by canoe. Depending on activity levels/leg length in the family, cycle some or all of the fab Sommières Voie Verte or greenway, running for 30 kilometres all the way to Nîmes. It's nicely flat and pretty easy even for smaller cyclists, and is almost all on a car-free route; start at Sommières and the Roman bridge over Vidourle river to see how far you get. As well as the beaches, cities and – just possibly – the vineyard visits nearby, carve out time too for a day at Aigues-Mortes (35 minutes), a medieval city with well-preserved city walls as well as expansive and ancient saltworks (look out for Camargue horses trotting almost wild at this last). It's a tiptop stopoff if you're off to the beach for the day too, as the salt marshes run along to neighbouring Le Grau-du-Roi.
