Not many campsites have their own waterpark, so that’s one thing that makes Camping Les Sables d’Or in Cap d’Agde a little bit special. The waterslides, lazy river and wave simulators at Pirates World make this a fabulous spot for a few days of family fun in Languedoc-Roussillon. But the offerings from this pristine modern campsite don’t end there, because it also has direct pedestrian access to a sandy Mediterranean beach (10 minutes’ walk), where you can catch some rays or grab a cocktail from Le Mandala beach bar. And talking of food, there’s a choice of nine outlets on site – from snack shacks to cocktail bars and fine-dining restaurants. Light and airy accommodation is in cabins shaded by a forest of poplars and pines, keeping everything nice and cool on sunny days. Inside are proper beds for a comfortable night’s sleep, ensuite shower rooms, spacious living and dining areas and well-equipped kitchenettes. Each unit has a leafy private garden for alfresco dining – head to the site's convenience store to pick up barbecue bits from the butcher, and a bottle of the local rosé wine to accompany your meal. Even without the waterpark, you’d never be short of something to do at Camping Les Sables d’Or, what with the tennis courts, boulodrome and sports fields. On top of that, your little cherubs can join in daytime fun at the dedicated kids’ club, and after dark, the entertainment teams keep you busy with musicals, casino nights and themed evenings (karaoke anyone?).

Local attractions

If you can drag the kids away from the all the pirate-themed fun on site, laze on the black sands of La Grande Conque at the foot of volcanic cliffs, swim and fish off the Plage de la Roquille, or hang out in the chilled beach bars backing Plage de Rochelongue (all 10 minutes’ drive). See the quieter corners of Cap d’Agde by hiking up volcanic Mont Saint-Loup (20 minutes) for views back to the Mediterranean, or head for the small village of La Tamarissiere (10 minutes) for strolls under the shade of pines. The colourful fishing harbour at Le Grau d’Agde (five minutes) is the place for long, leisurely seafood lunches in restaurants overlooking the waterfront. To introduce a hint of culture into your holiday, admire the ancient Greek and Roman bronze statues in the Ephèbe Museum (10 minutes), or tour the dank prison cells at 17th-century Fort de Brescou, built on a submerged volcano just off the coastline – take the boat from Port du Cap d’Agde (10 minutes). Reward younger kids for their patience with a visit to friendly goats and alpacas at the Cactus Park (15 minutes).

Liked: The park itself was lovely. Also the pool area apart from there was a very slippery area that water pooled and moss underneath very nearly slipped.car parking by the side of our very narrow and hedges not cut back.

Liked: The campsite was very clean, pool facilities were excellent..I especially liked that you could take your own food in but could have the option of bar snacks. The reception area was very welcoming on arrival, Helen was very helpful. The caravan was clean and spacious. Well located for outings to the nearby harbour and towns.

Disliked: The campsite welcomes people from all over Europe, however there is minimal signage in English and some (not all) of the staff do not seem keen or as tolerant to English guests.
