  • Spacious, peaceful site on 150 acres in the Cévennes National Park
  • 900 metres above sea level; half-hour drive to Millau and Mont Aigoual
  • Swimming pool, paddling pool, tennis courts and restaurant on site
Get set for heady hikes when you set off for this site in the Cévennes National Park: visitors to this rugged region have heaps of heather-covered moors, traditional granite towns and fine forests to explore. Domaine de Pradines is a secluded site that's well placed for exploring these smashing surrounds: it's three kilometres from the village of Lanuéjols and roughly halfway between Millau and Mont Aigoual (and about half an hour’s drive from both). Pitch up here if you like the high life: this 150-acre estate is located on the Causse Noir, 900 metres above sea level. This mid-mountain altitude means that suitable clothing and flashlights are a must (the nights can be cool and the dark sky protection zone means that there is very little outdoor lighting). There are, of course, splendid views to be had from such lofty heights, as well as several intriguing old buildings to inspect on site: this place was once a farm, home in a past life to Templars of old… The Cévennes territory means plenty of outdoorsy activities nearby: hiking, canoeing and caving are all within easy reach, and this is a smashing spot to explore with four-legged friends (handily, dogs are welcome at Domaine de Pradines.) Back at base, facilities include an outdoor pool with paddling area, plus two tennis courts, a playground and various games including pétanque and table tennis. An on-site shop and restaurant are open through the summer months, when guests also gather for themed meals such as paella nights. A bar-restaurant and grocery store are over in Lanuéjols; head to Meyrueis (20 minutes' drive) for more extensive supplies.

Local attractions

Geologists should rock up at Dargilan Cave (15 minutes' drive) or Aven Armand (35 minutes) for subterranean sightseeing. Above ground, the Chaos de Montpellier-le-Vieux (25 minutes) is home to an array of rock formations in dazzling dolomite. For a walk on the wild side, try Randals Bison (10 minutes) for namesake bulky bovines, horse riding and animal shows, or La Maison des Vautours (30 minutes), a wildlife park specialising in vultures. The birds roam free over the surrounding cliffside, but the centre has an observation deck and nifty museum – definitely worth more than a flying visit. Mont Aigoual (30 minutes) is the highest peak for miles around, with spectacular vistas over the Cévennes (on clear days, it's not unknown for guests to spot the far-off Mediterranean). As well as views, visitors can explore the mount's weather centre and meteorological museum. The pretty town of Millau is about half an hour from site: although most famous nowadays for its gobsmacking motorway viaduct (15 minutes out of town), visitors here can marvel at Gallo-Roman archaeology and the medieval belfry or pay a visit to the weekly market.
