  • Dutch-owned 36-hectare site on the banks of the Cèze river
  • A 45-minute drive from Gorges de l'Ardèche; 55 minutes from Avignon
  • Direct access to the river for swims, fishing and a sandy beach area
Upon arrival at Camping La Vallée Verte, it’ll likely not take you too long to work out that you’ve signed up to stay somewhere pretty special: making your way along the kilometre-long driveway is a bit of a giveaway on that front. Wend your way along this suitably impressive access road and you’ll eventually end up at the centre of this estate, which stretches out over a splendid 36 hectares of Languedoc-Roussillon countryside and runs all the way down to the banks of the River Cèze. This latter feature is an important one to note, as it means direct access to the water from the pebble beaches for freshwater paddles and swims, along with plenty of places to settle with a fishing rod. Don’t fancy a dip in the river? Head instead to the site’s outdoor pool or grab a book and some sun cream and lay claim to one of the loungers at the sandy beach area. There are plenty of activities to get stuck into as well, if that’s more your style – perhaps guided walks, yoga sessions and karaoke nights for the grownups, or ghost hunts, shows and games for the nippers. You might even be in for some tuneful times if you turn up during the annual guitar clinic held here. If the main activity you plan getting stuck into is eating and drinking, that’s easily sorted too, as the site has both a fine restaurant and a sociable bar. They’ll also bring you fresh bread in the mornings if you order a day ahead; for other supplies and more restaurants, it’s a 10-minute drive to La Roque-sur-Cèze.

Local attractions

Get out into the Gard countryside for a wander: site staff can point you towards some of the 300 kilometres or so of footpath that crisscross the area, taking in lavender fields, woodland and vineyards along the way. A particularly fine plan for walkers is to take the three-kilometre trail to the pretty Sautadet Waterfalls; horse riding and canoe trips can also be sorted if you’d like to roam in a different manner. More of that natural scenery? Make for the peaks of the Cévennes National Park or the towering cliffs of the Gorges de l’Ardèche, both around 45 minutes away by car. Or take to two wheels for a bike trip around the local vineyards – there are several within 10 kilometres of the site, with tastings to slake your thirst as you pedal and bottles to take home for later sipping. Bit of town time? Site staff recommend trips to the Roman monuments in Orange (45 minutes’ drive) and the medieval centre of Avignon (55 minutes).
